I just installed a #4 plate slightly forward of center and am experiencing lots of thick black smoke at launch. Moved the AFC and star wheel all the way back with minimal improvement. So, I adjusted the plate back of center (about 1/16 from where it was) and now smoke is gone but so is that hard push at full throttle. What else can be done to control smoke at launch? I remove a Jannetty #2 plate for the #4 and it looks like he might have been adjusting the AFC spring as the cap on the rear of the AFC housing is in the box of parts (with the stock plate). Would advancing the timing help eliminate smoke at launch? Or would adjusting the spring help? I'm not sure what to do the the spring adjustment nut on the rear of the AFC.

Have you advanced your timing to 16* yet? If not that is a good reason for some of the smoke. With what you have you need to advance the timing to 15. 5-16. 5* this will help control EGT's and smoke. With a larger turbo you could go to 17* but don't go any more.

Thanks for the replies. I talked to Harry @ piers and to TST. They both told me that there is not much that I can do to clean up pre-boost smoke with a plate that big and injectors. They suggested an AFC spring kit (may provide marginal improvents) and a valet switch. I finally found a good post that had plenty of info on adjusting the AFC. Quick question - Doesn't timing help some too? I thought I read somthing somewhere that advancing timing help clear up pre-boost smoke.

Thanks,

Paul

You answered my question while I was typing it. Thanks again.

On the smoke, a couple things I found. First, that #4 is one brutal plate @ low rpm. It's cut way deep @ low rpm, i. e. lots of fuel & then actually reduces fuel a little as the rpm rises, then stays constant. All that fuel is great for getting a load moving & spooling up a bigger turbo. :) Makes for a cool cloud out back. :)

Second, if you go to a bigger turbo, like one of the faster spooling HX40's with a 16 housing, you'll notice that the smoke is reduced when boost starts. Maybe that's from the increased volume, not sure, but that black soot creep arount the exhaust tip went away when I changed from the HX35-12 to the stock HX40-16. It was actually hard to get lots of smoke. :( Easily fixed with a bigger plate. Oo.

Piers HX40-16 starts spooling way sooner than the stock HX40-16, so low end smoke may not be a biggie. :)

My lower quarter panel and bumper end is all black from the soot. There's even soot on the mudflaps infront of the exhaust! Here's one for you - Yesterday on my way home from work, a woman was tailgating me in her BMW convertible. You know she wasn't pleased when after she was 'sooted'

You know once in a while kinda feel bad for people behind me,

I try not to do it in traffic as I've seen a few people swerve to get out of the cloud.

I'd sure hate to get sued for that?
