Turbo on 4bt

Phoenix Metro Performance Shop?

What would you get a small 4 cylinder cummins out of? Kind of like the one in the Toy at TiM. My friend has an like an early 50's Dodge that he was going to put some gasser in but I am gradually convincing him it needs to be diesel. :D

What would something like that cost?

I too would like to know about where to look for these motors. I have a 24 ft Bayliner that is screaming for a diesel. :D

Frito Lay had a bunch of them in P-30 step vans. Call Benny Avant at Avant Salvage

478-552-1902 or 800-553-8192. That's where I got mine

four cylinder turbo cummins

Yes on the case backhoe, and on the MacDon swathers. We have two with 4-cylinder CTD's

So the engine code on that 4 cylinder turbo diesel is 4BT then?

Thanks for the help, any idea how much one of these engines will cost used?

Be careful of the ones that were in offroad/construction equipement. The governor setup on those engines are different from "automotive" applications. The Frito Lay van motor is an automotive application (CPL858), which is what you want. An automotive type has a governor that works well for throttle on/ throttle off use. When driving a vehicle, you accelerate and deccelerate often, and it's governor is set up to do that. The offroad applications such as construction equipement generally are governed like this... ... ... . you move the throttle to WOT or near WOT and use a hydrostatic transmission to control the speed. The governor setup on these engines do not "respond" fast enough to use them the way an automotive application requires.

Avante' Salvage that BJ mentioned gets about 2500 dollars for a 4BT with your choice of turbo 400 or sm465 transmission. All of his are CPL858 automotive applications.

Ivan call Russ Fishers here in TH I bet they have one inside on the shelf or have a Frito lay or other bread truck wrecked and will sell your friend a 4bt [4 banger, b series, turbocharged] or 4bta [ 4 cyl, b series, turbo, aftercooled-intercooled]. Did ya catch any fish today? I saw you parking your truck on 41 :D

fish

Hey Bill,

Yeah we caught several. Hard to miss my truck sitting there isnt it? I just hope the cops or a CO dont think we are down there cooking meth. Its a real good spot to got if you dont mind getting wet.

Trying hard to convince my friend he needs a diesel in that truck but he is torn because his original plan was for a large gasser. Hopefully I can lead him to the force instead of the darkside:D .

Whats the new job by the way?

How much power can you get out of a 4 banger CDT? I sure would't want to drive a pickup around with only 100 horse. Can you crank them way up?

Cummins has one for marine apps that is 250 stock. I think it has a seawater aftercooler, and some limitations on how long it can be run at full power. I've got mine turned up a little and it feels strong. The bronco probably only weighs about 3000#. The torque is what makes it fun to drive, and it has plenty of that.

i run 105hp in my 6280lb rig. its good on road, and i just convinced 4 people to put them in there m715's. we rode in kentucky and the thing walks up and down everything and NEVER needed any additional accelerator pedal. it literally idled.

Anybody know of one in a Durango or Dakota? Another thread said something about them being too tall. The ones referred to on eBay looked pretty tall. Could you get by with a cowl induction hood or would it still be too tall. What kind of $ would you be looking at for a conversion?:--)

I have heard that the 4bt with rotary pump can make up to about 200 rwhp. I would guess that the p-pumped 4bta could do 250+

I want one in a boat too. I think a 2. 5L VW Tdi would be a real efficient engine in a 23' boat. Cummins already has the 1. 7L in Bayliner's Trophy 20' boat.

For what its worth, I have a brand new one in the classifieds for sale. It's older, purchased in '90 for a conversion project into a suburban, but never installed. Still on the shipping pallet. Proper CPL number.
