I finally got enough time to install ted Janetty's 4" system from the headpipe to the muffler (muffler on was already 4" scavanged from my earlier truck). But after talking to Ted awhile back, I decided to install the US gear "super-duty" (no not the F-guys) Decellerator. This is a 4" diameter unit with waste-gate bypass. Very hefty casting. What I did was use the front hanger on the headpipe still at stock location, run an extension pipe to behind the transfer case crossmember and bolt the Decellerator up directly before the muffler. So the stock resonator is gone, and it's a half Janetty/half-Banks system. Sound is just a little louder than before, but not noticable in the cab at all.
Here's what IS noticable.
1) Markedly quicker spool-up on turbo and hence, response to throttle. Expected that.
2) Enough increase in power to make me feel that I am not having to use as much pedal to achive the same speed. Pleasant surprise.
3) Engine starts quicker and just feels like it is "freer", like it breathes better. Makes me wonder why D/C doesn't do this from the factory.
4) The BIG surprise; resonance in the cab at about 45 mph is GONE! Much more pleasant on the road. I attribute this to the different characteristics of the 4" pipe, and the damping effect of that heavy casting on the Decellerator. Steve McDaniel noted this elsewhere on the forum. That stock headpipe acts like a pipe hit with a hammer. It needs damping.
BTW, I haven't hooked up the lecetrics on the Decellerator yet. Maybe next weekend. Hoping it will do better than some of the reports I've seen on the smaller unit. Ted, feel free to wade in here- has anyone else put this rig together?
