4" MBRP VS. AfE Exhaust?

Oo. I LOVE MY MBRP STAINLESS SINGLE,EXHAUST NOTE CAN'T EVEN BE HEARD UNLESS YOU PUT YOUR FOOT IN IT OR I'M RUNNING AT ABOUT 75MPH NOT LOUD AT ALL JUST THROATHIER.

Sort of a devils advocate kind of answer. The MBRP is great in that it has the 100% welded hangers that reuse the stock rubber mounts, so it looks and installs just like a stock system. The AFE system uses clamp on hangers and does fit great, but doesn't have the OEM look to it that the MBRP does. It also has a 2 piece tail pipe, some folks like it some don't care and others prefer the one piece. Performance and sound is for all practical purposes the same. We have been selling both for quite a while and customers of both are very happy with either. It's just a function of how easy of an install and original stock look you want.

That is the determining factor for me... I can't take my 5" anymore because of the drone... sick of my ears ringing after a trip!

It probably won't work on a 06 due to the cat. It will work on my 04 though If he doesn't want it I might be interested in it.

Decent fit, looks nice. The downside to the MBRP cat-back "cool duals" on my '05 Laramie QC LWB is a deafening drone at 2,200 RPM, especially on an upgrade or when towing. I'm told this is more of a problem with long-bed rigs (like mine) for some reason. Everything is properly suspended from the factory rubber isolators and no part of the exhaust system is contacting the frame, bed, axle, springs, shocks or spare tire. MBRP suggested that I add either their resonator or their Power Tube between the kitty and the "cool duals" muffler, but I refuse to be their test mule at my expense. I realize that this is a "performance" system and with that, one must assume the risk that it is going to have an elevated level of noise, but this 2,200 RPM drone is intolerable. I wished that MBRP would have offered an alternate system for those folks who like the looks of dual exhaust, but want a tamer system. I'm considering scrapping this system and going with either the Banks Monster dual exhaust or back to my factory single exhaust system. Anyone wish to comment (good, bad or indifferent) on their experiences with the Banks Monster dual exhaust system?

I agree about the drone 100% with the mbrp duals. I would like to also add the tailpipe hangers suck.

Mark likes to post how great these kits are and that they have zero complaints, but some of us have seen different and he has been known to post replies in other places like oilburners to such probs.



Mark should step out of the sales room once and while and open up a box to see what is really inside. The tailpipe hangers are not the same as OEM @ least on every kit I have seen. The muffler used in this kit is the cheapy muffler others use in their adds to compair to. You will have drone for sure If you remove the cat.



overall fit of this kit is good

tailpipes will have to be measured and @ least 1 side cut to be even on both sides. [mine was aprox 7 inches longer on drivers.

tailpipe hangers suck and are not OEM quallity

muffler used makes truck sound like a ricer [if the cat is gone]

No most trucks don't have that issue at all, it's wierd some do and some don't . Wonder if some guys are loaded/towing at low speed and lugging the engine while others are zipping along and have the motor "on the pipe" per say and don't get any vibration etc.

You have a different turbo outlet, and of course the cat etc. Get a cat back 5 inch MBRP aluminized and the cat test pipe.

Try the resonator, you'll be pretty surprised at how much difference it makes. At 2200 RPM especially with a load even a stock system sets up the resonance vibration that you are feeling. Heck if you have room (do some measurements, we have done it before but always want to make sure there is room) do a 30 inch MBRP muffler as far forward as possible. We'll cut you a deal and help you anyway we can.

Easy there, they are great kits, we sell over 300 a month and the number of issues we have is very very small. If you take the number of product issues we have overall with all the product lines we stock MBRP has the least!



Concerning the hangers I don't remember if it was you but someone a while back was saying the diameter of the hanger rod was smaller than the stock hanger, it's not they are the same 3/8ths diameter. The stock hanger has a forged nubbin on the end of it while the MBRP has a bent over end at 45 degrees. Operationally they are the same.



the muffler is the same muffler MBRP has been using since day one. It's a ceramic blaknet and stainless steel wool packing material with a 6 inch diameter. The dual muffler is shorter than the single tail systems because of room to work under the truck but otherwise they are the same. Same muffler as the MK96116 2004. 5+ replacement muffler that everybody here brags on and loves???



I would love to get out from behind this desk more often, but don't fool yourself I have likely installed more exhaust systems that 99% of the folks that visit TDR.com, and most of them on the ground at a truck show at that!!



If your tail pipes were not lining up correctly I bet you'll find a slip joint that is not seated all the way. The duals I have installed fit really well, but if you have the muffler in a slight twist or one of the slip joints in not seated ALLL the way in it'll drive you nuts (short trip in my case). On the second one I installed I marked the inner pipes for the slip joints with a sharpie so I could KNOW they were seated alll the way. Been doing it that way since and it hasn't been an issue.



The ricer sound is true, and every muffler I have heard is the same, it's a function of the engine more than the muffler.



As far as posting differently on other sites I try to be as honest and up front as possible. When you PLAY on the net it's waaaaaay to easy to be hammered by folks that have an axe to grind for one reason or the other. So you have to be consistent and fair with all that you post. What you say could be a possibility but I bet it was taken out of context. What would be the advantage to me or the customer by acting/posting one way here and another some place else????

Thanks for all of the input guys...

I never lug the engine, especially while towing... it is the most deafening between 1900 and 2500 rpm's.

After having the 5" for a couple of years now, my ears never stop ringing, ever, especially bad after a long trip, of course.

All joking aside, I was a drummer in various heavy rock bands back in the 80's/90's, playing darn near 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and this exhaust has done more damage than doing that!

The problem with the hangers is they way they attach to the frame and the rubber used between the 2. This is not Oem quality by any means.



I did not say my tailpipes were not lining up I said 1 was longer than the other. They lined up perfectly but 1 was longer than the other. I have installed many exhaust systems and have also wrenched for a diesel performance shop back to when the diesel craze was just being born. My tailpipes were and are fully seated and welded. One was just plain longer.



Not all mufflers are the same don't kid yourself.



These are inline 6's and if you think that we are lugging them with an auto you have been around too many v'8's. By the way my target road speed is a min 70mph. The aftermarket muffler I have added has tamed it to a reasonable level not made it worse as per previous suggested. This was added to the kit up as far as possible.

Your replies remind me of a well trained service manager talking in circles and in the end the problem is never the product but the consumer.

They do attach to the frame differently as the drivers side is being added to the truck and ther isn't an OEM hanger to copy or use. It's a piece of plate stainless with a rod welded to it and a twin hole rubber mount. We've been selling the same design for MBRP since 2003, haven't replaced a rubber or steel mount to date here at DPPI. Your original comment was the hangers SUCK! Well the hangers I was speaking of are the rods welded to the pipes, not the rubber mount. You didn't say one way or the other and I thought that was what you meant.



No not all mufflers are the same, but this is the SAME muffler design that MBRP has been using since day one of their product. Ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool packing and a spiral louvered core. The truck sounds ricey because of the engine/turbo changes that were made in 2003, not the muffler. If you add any packed or probably unpacked (we don't sell unpacked as they actually create a restriction) muffler to that system it will sound the same. Unless you use a chambered type like a Flowmaster gas muffler anyway.



We get the calls every week from some guy usually older and retired that's in no hurry (lucky stiff) that cruises with his 3. 73 equipped diff at 55 MPH and 38 foot wind busting triple slide out RV and his RPM is waaaaaay low. It causes drone in the stock exhaust when you do this with a load on it. I don't have any way to know how you drive, just pointing out some info that might apply to you that we have seen happen in the past. Take it and use it or not it's your option.

That's a pretty DIRECT statement basically saying I have no knowledge of what I sell and product in general. I won't sit here and take that from anyone.

That is in a sort of off hand way calling me a liar, and I won't stand for that either! Please present me with the info I have posted on other sites that is contrary to anything I have posted here.

If anything you didn't get me enough info to get you the right info on the hangers, if you want to call that changing context go ahead, plus I mentioned that someone maybe you mentioned the hanger diameter, makes what I was trying to convey pretty obvious. I don't see any other items that have been misread at all. Trying to help you mostly!

Do/did you have a muffler on that 5" system? Im running a 5 inch turbo back with muffler without resonator and i dont have any drone, more noise from the 35in mud grips.

The hangers you describe are different than the ones in my kit and the kits that I have seen. There is a picture of what you describe on another site. This hangers system would be alright. Mine is a POS.



My original post was not hangers suck, It was tailpipe hangers suck. Misread again?

When tailpipe hangers come in a kit they are a unit not just the metal rod on the pipe.



Now not all mufflers are the same? That is the opposite of your last stament.



Did not mention road speed, you then assumed the prob was the consumer yet again.

I said my pipes were different lengths not missalighned. Passing the buck to the consumer or Misread you choice.
