I've got a few things on their way so I can piece together my own 4" exhaust. I ordered a Walker 21471 and I am debating about putting the thing on. I'm concerned about this supposed wistle from the muffler that a member says he's having with the little bro of the 21471, the 21468.

I would like to save the $100, but I want the truck to have an agressive, but not annoying sound to it. IMO if I can hear the exhaust over the forceful knocking of the Cummins cruising down the highway, it's too loud.

I only want to do this exhaust job once, and I know ultimately every individuals "taste" for the sound of the exhaust is unique, but I'd appreciate some input. Muffler or not?

Thanks Ryan

I have tried both with and without the muffler you are going to use. The 4" straight pipe is cool for a while, but IMO is too loud for doing any around the town driving. The Walker muffler still gets plenty of looks and still sounds plenty loud when next to a building. Either setup is pretty quiet with the windows rolled up.

Cooker, its me that having the problem with the walker muffler. I only have the 3" of course but that **** whistle will drive you nuts. I don't know if you have a stick or auto. I have a 6 speed and everytime I upshift it makes a high pitch whistle. I guess some people like this sound but not me. I hope it turns out better than mine did.

big barney,
I've been wondering this since I read your thread the first time, is the whistle you speak of the turbo whistle or is it actually a sound generated by the muffler itself?

bholcomb,
What walker muffler are you using?

Cooker

I'm using the 21468. I think the whistle is from the turbo. The sound is not bad at highway speeds or accellerating. It the sound it makes when I shift through the gears. It kind of a whoosh whistle noise. Someone explained to me it was the wastegate closing when I shift that makes the noise. I'm no expert but it makes sense to me.

I'm gonna put the muffler on.

The guy who will be installing the system said he could put make it very easy to switch between both by putting flanges on both ends of the muffler and replacement straight pipe. I don't know if it is worth another $75-$100.

Just waiting for my downpipe.
