Cats are very careful creatures. They want to have the upper hand at all times. If they don't feel comfortable, they won't attack, unless they're just starving.
New Mexico makes you take a class, too. They try to teach you that you have to identify sex before shooting!!! How screwy is that!! They just want to make it difficult as possible, so the tree huggers won't scream bloody hell... . Ridiculous. I do know most of the farmers and ranches in Western Texas and New Mexico are having some problems, if you see one an don't try to shoot it, you won't be invited back!! Those guys have calves and sheep eaten every day!!! It doesn't take a cat very long to decimate a sheep herd!! They'll eat a lamb or kid almost every day, and if there's more than one cat, it gets serious, quick!!
A good 357, . 45, or . 44 work well on cats. Shot placement is everything, but they'll work. I had a friend kill one in January with a . 38+p round. Shot it in the face looking up at him from a wash!!! He stepped over it before he saw it!! Not near as big as the kitty above, but pretty good sized, and very healthy.
