Just got back from Dodge to pickup a fuel filter and a few crush washers for the banjos. Now I know why there has been so many creative  names for the dealers. Those guys want $45 for a fuel filter for my 02. I knew I could do better so I slid it right back to the parts guy. An hour later I was at the local Cummins parts dept and got the filter for $12. In fact, I bought two.

Now I know..... and I have a few creative new names for my local DC #@!*er :D

$$ fuel filters$$$

Next time try some body like Geno's or cummins them self's. .

filter is 14$, washers are next to nothing.

just my $. 02. :D

(next time i'll read the whole thread before i post. . )

... try $3. 08 ea. for the little bolts used to attach the driveshaft to the pinion yoke!

... try $3. 22 ea. (list price... I paid $1. 85 ea. ... bless their hearts) for the black plastic rivets used to attach the end of the upper bumper fascia or wheel liners!

... try $37. 07 for a new black plastic front license plate kit (includes the license plate holder, 6 screws, and 2 nylon push-in bumper "nuts")

... try...

time out while I reload my gun and shoot myself in the other foot!

my favorite. $2. 75 each for those little plastic pieces that hold the under-hood insulation on, same piece that holds the door panels on.

Try NAPA for those little odds and ends of plastic hardware. Some of the stores have a pretty extensive selection at a more reasonable price.

My 97' had lost those plugs with the big flat head that hold the insulation under the hood. The parts man said no such thing when he could not find a listing. I showed him one. He found what he thought was the number. Part came in but guess what? Wrong. Not to mention, three bucks per.

Good posts, gents. The best way to deal with these things is to spread the word here, so we can "Speak with our wallets", and purchase our parts someplace other than at a Mopar Parts Counter.

Remember White Knight's engine that toasted with 14k miles with a Fleetguard filter on it?? The dealer tried to weasel out of that one.

If things had not been resolved, I don't see why we couldn't have had one of those "XEROX Membership Drives" as outlined on the rear covers of the TDRs. Only this time, we could have printed the thread detailing the engine's failure and the "support" from the dealer. Then what do you think would have happened when these copies were distributed "Under the windshield wipers" of new trucks at the "dealers" ??

$22 at Cummins.

was $24, now $28. 53 at napa, but i wont go back to cummins to buy them.

i think that i'm going to start getting them from genos!

How about 1. 50 per little yellow "christmas tree" clips that hold the doors on. Ripped all mine out when I did new speakers and mirrors. Figured why not go for the new one right? Went to get the new ones... ... ... ... well its like 13 per front door and 8 per back and had to replace them all.

Thats roughly $63 dollars (with out tax) for . 11cents of plastic. Damn I know I went into the wrong business!

LOL

Oh boy, here we go again :-{} ... ... .....

Four words guys... ... . Shop around and Save!

ESPECIALLY on things you DON't have to get from dealer!!!;)

I went to my local Dodge dealer when I found that some of the clips holdinng the under-hood insulation had broke, they gave me about 5 of them at no cost.

This is the same dealer that replaced my injector pump in one day under warranty. They also did the secondary hood latch recall while they had it and saved me another trip.

I have nothing but good things to say about Lucas-Smith Dodge in Festus, MO

My dealer gave me 5 - $20 off coupons when I bought my truck. You can use them for service on your truck. When they did my 1st oil and filter change they told me that since I bought it there I got them for $36. I handed them one of the coupons thinking that would reduce it to $16 and was told that if I used a coupon that I would be charged the regular price of $52, so the coupon would save me $4 :-laf I saved the coupon for some other service. There is no free lunch. :(

I know how you feel, it only took me one trip to the dealer to teach me to look around. I buy WIX filters for less than a third of what the dealer wanted for a fuel filter. I think I had to pick my jaw up off the counter when they rang up my order for my first filter change.

This is one of the things I like about the TDR. If the dealer trys to excessively lighten our pocket books we can just jump on this forum and find an alternative product, vendor, or do it yourself instructions. Usually with great success.

I recently was in need of some door panel clips, dealer wanted $2. 40 each, found another vendor and part number in a TDR post, ordered and paid $10. 87 for fifty. My membership has paid for itself many times over. Thanks to all on the TDR!

When I installed my Power Vision mirrors (2nd gen. ), I went to the Dodge dealer and ordered 30 plastic door panel clips... 26 required for both front doors + 4 extra (just in case... :D ). At $2. 00 ea. , needless to say, I was not happy! I later found almost exact copies at a local hardware store for less than 50 cents ea.

Here's another favorite of mine...

I ordered 2 new rubber seals from my local Dodge dealer (one left, one right... they install to the inside edge of each headlight housing and seal against the grille when closed) plus 6 new little black plastic rivets that are required to retain the lip that attaches to the sheet metal (the other lip attaches to 3 lugs on the headlight housing).

Ok, here is the breakdown...

$15. 00 for each of the 2 rubber seals (that's rape in itself, but wait, there's more... )

$4. 75 ea. for those small black plastic rivets (and I just checked my receipt to double check this data):eek:

Yep its crazy alright. I was in a few weeks ago picking up the truck and a guy was in there getting ready to pay for 3 fuel filters and 3 Oil Filters. Needless to say I politely told the guy before he got to the cashier that drive across town to the Kenworth dealership where I buy my filters usually, for 1/4 of the cost he was about to pay. He set them filters down right there and thanked me. :D :D Still waiting to see if he joined the TDR or not.

We can blame the dealer-- BUT

When I told the parts guy what I could buy a lift pump for, he said it was about 30 % less than his cost. He also told me that DC would not pay them for warranty work if the dealer buys parts --even cummins parts from anyone else but DC. [there is an inventory check thingy hooked to the dealer computer that interfaces with DC's computer that would show a shortage of ordered parts]

I do not know how good a judge of character I am ,but I believe he was telling the truth as he told me his cost and dealer markup.

He is also amused when a Cummins part comes in with a DC part number glued over the Cummins number. He stated that once the customer checks the Cummins price, they never see us for out of warranty parts.
