You just form them by running the . 444 marlin case through the . 338 jdj #2 sizing die, trim them to length, load them, shoot them once at a light load, then run them through the sizing die again and trim them once more - then they are all set to go. You can also buy brass from SSK if you wish. I also had RCBS make a custom neck sizing die for me and I usually just size the necks only now.

Lsmith - I have a mossberg 500 pump with a pistol grip on it. It will be coming along on the trips also. I guess I am a believer in being prepared. I sure would hate to stumble into the trees to take a leak and need that shotgun that I left on the ATV.

now that i've read your ? get the ruger becuase it is double action, that would be better for self defense.

as far as the ruger streching it's frame that is what i was told by a local gun guru. he said you can not run the the high cup pressures with a six shooter. his fa gun is actually kind of loose after shooting over 2k hot rounds through it. the ruger must be fairly new in that calibur.

If your choosing between Ruger & Taurus, get the Ruger. But if money isn't a problem, get the Freedom Arms. It has the best grip handle out of the three. It's designed to help with recoil. If you reload then the ultimate would be the Freedom Arms in . 475 linebaugh! That would take out any game in north america. It also has heavier bullet weights to choose from.

I haven't had the priviledge of shooting the Ruger or the Taurus, but have shot a friends Desert Eagle 50AE and I can tell you that it's one hell of a balanced piece, especially when firing a Hot Loaded 50cal. bullet.

I expected the barrel to fly back and hit me in the face, but it didn't. I guess that's why it's front heavy.

I liked it enough to be saving up for the Titanium Nitride coated version (add $500) and maybe get the 3 caliber kit.

I agree with the 12 ga. idea. I've talked to people who've been in the Alaska outback and that's what they carried. Load with shot and slugs alternately - shot for blinding and slug for the kill! I talked to one guy who killed a polar bear with a 357 that was lurking around his camp. He said he was never so scared as when he had to check to be sure it was dead before he slept that night! I've been playing with deerslugs for fun - they're real impressive! Kick like a big milkcow! I say "milkcow" because I've never been kicked by the proverbial 'mule'! Craig

I think the 12 gauge is a great idea. The 12 ga. slug is awesome in performance, but I believe we are getting a little off base. Another good long gun option would be the Marlin guide gun in 45/70 cal. FYI on barrel cutting, I spoke with Magnaport today, the price to cut, recrown and 2 slot Magnaport my Redhawk is $150. 00 plus another $50. 00 to clean up the lettering on the barrel. I also received an e-mail today from Gary Reeder, about the same cost. Both are backlogged at least 12 weeks.

I concur with CUMINNSTRKN... the Freedom Arms single action 454s are so superior in strength to the Ruger investment casted guns... well, it would be like comparing a new Porsche to a new Volkswagen. Both are high quality products however, the Freedom Arms is a major cut above the rest. For instance, the cylinders are line bored on location so each cylinder hole is in exact alignment with the centerline of the barrel bore. The Freedom Arms guns are truly manufactured like a precision one-off, custom gun... close is not good enough for them.

I'm not a fan of wheel guns however, I WOULD purchase a Freedom Arms in a heartbeat! If Freedom Arms made that bad boy in a semi-auto it'd be a done deal (for me)!

One secret though, get the wood grips... the rubber grips are much harder on your hands/body as the gun will not roll in your hand during recoil, thereby transmitting more recoil to the shooter. Besides, the wood grips go with the wood you get when you shoot one of these FA 454s.

Bigsaint, as long as we are getting off track... I would personally choose my Benelli M1 Super 90 (semi-auto) 12 ga. with Remington 3" Magnum rifled slugs. The absolute extreme in lethal combinations.

Just a note. A buddy of mine had gotten some 'bullet-proof' glass from a remodeling job a friend of his was doing. They decided to see just how bullet-proof it really was. They shot it with everything. . 357's, . 45's, 30-06, . 223, 12 ga. slugs. , and yes the mighty . 44 mag. Nothing broke it. Enter the . 454. One shot, Done! Blew the thing away and buried the bullet into the stump behind it. That was cool! #ad

Went and picked up my Ruger 454 today. I wanted to look at the freedom arms but they did not have any said they have been backorderd for 12 weeks. Went by wal-mart and got two boxes of 300 grain shells. . going to give it a try in the AM. Got my ear plugs ready.

Make sure you use ear protection. I have a 454 raging bull, AND IT IS LOUD. It is a major hand cannon. I take mine deer hunting during shotgun season. And It will drop a deer right now.

Bigsaint - I thought I was going to get to fire it on friday but the weather was too crappy. Looks like I will get a chance on Sunday now. First impression is that it is one hell of a gun. I actually bought two of them (my brother is buying the second one from me) and both were nice. I looked them both over trying to find some bad machining or poor fitting parts and all looked good. The only real bummer is that I should have waitied to buy it. There is a huge sportsmans show in town this weekend and I saw the same gun for $100 bucks less, but what the heck I only paid $595 and list is $750. I have the double hearing protection ready and will report back on Monday.

Sounds good, keep us in the loop. $595. 00 sounds pretty good, I wouldn't sweat a $100. 00. The nice thing about the Rugers is the ease of disassembly. Add a Trapper or Brownells spring kit and maybe a little honing and you'll be set. That's my only complaint with the Ruger revolvers, their triggers are not too "crisp" from the factory. Any idea of what kind of leather (or other) your going to pack that beast in ?

You made a good choice with the Ruger, they offer great value in all their guns!! I would recommend the 260 grain Winchester withe the Nosler bullet for a factory load. The 454 has enough velocity with this bullet that you can get by with using a lighter bullet than you can with a 44, I always recommend the 300-320gr LBT or JDJ hard cast with the 44 for bear or moose. The 260 will give you less recoil and flater trajectory. A friend (the Freedom Arms Rep. for Alaska) shot clean thru a Cape buffalo with the 260, which are way more massive and heavily boned than our big bears in Ak. I have shot several brown/grizzly bears with a 44 with the mentioned heavy bullets and have never recovered a single bullet as they completely penetrated and the bears all died quickly. I used a 500 Linebaugh and a 475 Linebaugh for several seasons of guiding and they are impressive!! I have lately gone back to the 44 5. 5" Redhawk. ( It is cheap,easy to shoot with the Pachmayer rubber grips and very effective

Well I finally got to shoot the monster and all I can say is WOW. I was just shooting it into a frozen pond (in front of Knik Glacier for you Alaskans out there) that was about 30 yards away but had little problem hitting the same spot on the ice. My buddy that also shot it and has been shooting revolvers for a long time fired it and then asked me if I wanted to sell it to him. But it is a cannon and loud. We talked to some guys that heard us shooting it 10 miles away. The only complaint I have is the grip, something is just not right, I have very large hands and will have to look into some other grip, any reccomendations?

Bigsaint - Don't know what to carry it in, I am looking for one of those across the chest holsters (don't know what they are really called). I just have to go to the gun shop and look in the uncle mikes catalog and find the darn thing.

Beartrack - so you are saying that the 260gr rounds are enough to stop a grizzly. . cause that is what I bought it for?

Glad the shoot went well. The last time I checked, the Ruger GP-100 grip frame and the Super Redhawk were one in the same as far as grips go. You could always try out a pair of Pachmayrs, although I doubt they would be much different than the stock grips. They do make a set of finger groove "grippers" for the GP-100, should fit but check before you order. I had a set of custom grips made by Mustang a long time ago. I checked the net and was unable to locate their site. I think what you need is a custom set of grips that mimick the single action plow frame contour, to allow that recoil to rise up in your hand, rather than push same straight back.
