My car broke down and had to be towed today. The tow truck was an Int. 4700 with a 466E, International's "Powerstroke". I'm not the kind to talk bad about another brand while ignoring my own truck's shortcomings, but this thing was a DOG! It almost stalled 4 times while starting off from a stop, twice on level surface. He had it in first (the second forward gear out of seven). Even my wife mentioned this to me. I thought that my truck was slow. I know that the truck empty is heavy but it could hardly move a 3600lb payload! If this is what "they" have in their pickups they should never say anything negative about the mighty Cummins! It is NO wonder why Ford offers the Cummins in their 2 biggest F- series and not the"Power?stroke". Rich P. S. Anybody know why a wheel would suddenly lock up after changing a flat?

The 446 is an 446 c. i. inline six. The 444 is the powerstroke (444 c. i. ). I beleive that quite a few tractor pullers use this engine (diesel and alcohol), so it can be built pretty stout. This is about all I know about these engines.

The DT466E is a good engine... It's basically the elctronic version of the DT466, which used a P7100 mechanical pump. The 466E is HEUI injected, just like the PSD (T444E). In fact, the injectors look virtually indentical, as do the ones for the I530E, which is the 466E's big brother.

Power can be turned up on the 466E, but yes, they are a dog if they are not the HO version. The I530E is also pretty powerful. Both motors are very stout, and more reliable that the T444E. :D

In the larger Fords (F650/750), the PSD is offered. The other engine choices include the ISB and a Caterpillar 3126B. The 3126B is a 7. 2L inline six, and is HEUI injected. It's very similar to the DT466, but has more power and is expensive to repair. It is pretty reliable, and can be turned up too. :)

444E

The 444E is what Navistar calls the PS.

The DT466 is an inline 6 that is used in trucks by Navistar

and sold by DDC as an industrial engine called the series 40. It

comes in 7. 6 and 8. 7 liters.

HEUI injected or mechanical, daveshoe?

Also, there are some differences between the PSD and the T444E, just like there are differences with the Chrysler ISB and a true Cummins ISB. Lots of features are omitted.

HEUI engines are simple, easy to work on, and can develop LOTS of power. HEUI and HPCR along with variable geometry turbocharging are the ways of the future. Pump-line-nozzle systems are antiquated at best, but they are where the real power is--especially for drag racing. :D

T444E = 444 in² = 7. 3L V8

DT466E = 466 in² = 7. 6L I6

I530E = 530 in² = 8. 7L I6

One of our towtrucks has a 444 in it and it is a dog. We towed a chevy 14' cube van and it went at a max of 61mph on the interstate downhill. Poochy, but the 466 is way better since it is the correct design( I6 ) Stay away from 444's.

At my old job, we had a 1983 International with a DT466e and an Allison auto behind. The truck would pull 38,000 with no problems. We also had a 1986 International DT466e with a 10 speed Eaton Fuller transmission that we cranked the living $#!T out of. The only truck we had that could keep up with it was a 73 GMC Rhino 10 ton with a 427 tall block. All and all, the 466 is a great engine and if taken care of will run for ever. If those trucks had a 444e you would never get 750,000+ miles out of them.

Just my 0. 02$

You sure it was an '83??? The 466 didn't get eletronics until the early 90's... I'll bet the rig you had (if it was an 83) had the good old mechanical injection... Those things had some serious nuts. :D

I would believe it. One farm I worked on had an International graintruck with a DT466 in it. Man, would it haul :eek: .

I am sorry, I did not mean to put an e on the end :confused:

When the Cummins wears out, I will probably own the International DT466. This engine has been around for a long time and has an excellent record.

Hey Evan-- Mechanical

Biggest load ever pulled was loaded truck at 47000 and backhoe on trailer at 18000 - at the same time. From standing start she pulled up a six percenter in second gear low range[split axle] It takes 5 gallons of differential in the rears and a sledge hammer of considerable reputation to pull the rear axle.

At the expense of getting kicked out of the TDR I will submit that the sound of the turbo between gear shifts is even cooler than the mighty ISB!

I think there are different setups and horsepower ratings with this motor because a customer has one in a newer farm truck that is not as powerful as mine , This is a '78 with half a million on the clock, so it's the old smoke and choke motor.

I wish I had air horns like this on the Dodge :D

We had a DT466 in a International dumptruck. One day pulling a load of stone down the highway the driver hears the engine knocking and looks at the oil pressure gauge 0psi . He pulls off the road and calls me. It turns out the oil drain plug had fallen out and lost all the oil. I installed a new plug filled it with oil and fired the truck back up. :D The truck ran fine for years after, when we scaped the truck the engine went on to power a generator.

Your lucky RDavies . When I work'd for the local School District as a mechanic I had one of the drivers run her bus so long with out checking or getting her oil change that it got low on oil . She heard it knocking on a game trip way out of town coming home in the middle of the night and shut it down and call'd me to check it out . I put some oil in it and it still knock'd . I ended up pulling it home with my 1978 Police Package Dodge Monaco that had a 440 in it . The next morning I pull'd the pan and it had spun a rod insert . I put a new insert in it and it spun it in no time at all . In fact I put several inserts in it and it spun all of them , didn't want to rebuild it . I use to work at a IHC Dealership and have work'd on lots of tractors and trucks with the DT 466 in them . They are good engines but a friend of mine is a heavy truck mechanic and he has told me that the DT 466 that are in the newer trucks today are not as good as the older DT466's . Also there is a wrecker driver in town that has a International truck with that power stroke (444e)in it and he hates it . Every time he see's me at the store he checks out my truck . He is always telling me how the wrecker has no power and wishes he had got it with a Cummins !!!!!!!!
