Have a ATS stage III 47RE and have stripped the input shaft to hub/retainer. 120000 on the trans, normal driving, some trailer towing. Have seen prices for billet input shafts for @800 bucks. Is this a problem with this trans? Is there a cheaper fix for it?

How much horsepower are you running, how do you drive it and do you have an exhaust brake. 3 big factors in an input shaft.

No exhaust brake. Have 75HP over stock injectors and an Edge Comp box set at 1-3. Drive it normal, wasn't flooring it when it broke. I have a ATS triple lock converter, ATS Commander lockup controller. Trans will shift into 3rd, lockup, then 4th. It was when it locked up when it broke. Tore xmission apart, all looked good, clutches, bands, but input shaft where it splines into rear clutch drive hub stripped.

Did it strip the shaft or the piston retainer? Without the piston retainer it just transfers the problem to it if the shaft is good. The commander and triple lock likely contributed to that failure. Probably a good idea to go with a billet shaft and piston retainer instead of just shaft.

If you are shifting gears with the trans in lock up (unless I mis read your post) that is more than likely your problem

ATS does warn buyers that their triple clutch TC can be hard on stock trannys. I have been running their triple lock and controller for 11 years without issues, but I did put in better transmission parts.

I will replace both parts. Both seem to be toast. Just didn't think that the parts would be that expensive.

Handling all the TQ from a medium duty engine is not cheap. Main reason why the stock version was detuned and the transmission so sloppy. The $800 to put the power down is a bargain.

Recently put my trans back together with a spare input shaft from a 46RE,(they look the same). My trans is a ATS stage III with a supposedly heavy duty input shaft, which had 100,000 miles on it. Some trailer towing ( 8000 lbs ) not driven hard. Splines between hub and shaft stripped. Did it on acceleration when going into 4th after converter locked. Have serviced this trans 3 times since I got it, with Allison Transynd fluid. Only thing in the pan was a couple metal fragments from the splines. I guess I'm asking anyone, was this an issue with ATS? The shaft looked stock. I dont think it should have stripped. Also, I see ads that say 1 piece billet shafts, does that mean the shaft and hub are 1 piece?

Yes, the 1 piece units are machined out of a single piece and treated the retainer hub and shaft are not splined. If you just replace the shaft and do not do the hub you move the weak spot to the splines. You need to do a billet hub and shaft or the one piece or you can still strip the splines.

One of the inherent problems with using just a shaft and not the piston retainer also. The hard hitting triple disk do not do them any favors either, especislly hammering into lockup in OD under a load.

When I have the money, I will replace my triple disc with something more tame, and go with the billet input. Now, I just get by by letting off the pedal when I feel the shift coming or lockup coming.
