i went with a bottom line goerend trans and had Bass Transmission of Roanoke VA istall it. i would have to say you get what you pay for. if you plan to keep the truck, i would do it right the first time. there is a diesel shop in Dublin va that does performance and all that good stuff. i think its called Hot Rod Diesel Auto Garage but i could be wrong. i work at ups and saw a south bend clutch being shipped to them a while back. i gave them a call to find out what all they did but never looked that far into it.

Thanks for your observations cerberusiam. This turns out to be normal vehicle function. When the truck has been sitting for more than a few days, letting it idle in neutral for 30 sec or so before driving off eliminates the problem. Before I would just back it out of the garage and take off. I gather neutral exercises all the circuits, whereas the same 30sec spent in reverse waiting for the garage door to close does not. I love zero cost fixes.

Your last comments sound like my transmission. When it sits for a week or two the fluid drains from the torque converter and it's no go. I just put it in drive and wait for the TC to fill up and the truck starts to move. Then it's fine. It's caused by a sticking check valve letting the fluid drain back. The FSM even mentions that if the pressure comes up in 30 seconds or a minute then don't worry about it. There's no fluid circulation in Park so it has to be N or D. I don't know about Reverse.

I have a similar truck, with a Banks Power-pack. I had a Banks billet torque converter with a shift kit installed about 80k miles ago, and have had no problems so far. I tow a 39ft. tow hauler , GVWR 18000. Last year I replaced the trans filter & fluid, just as a precaution. Hope this helps.

I gather neutral exercises all the circuits,

Yes, the biggest thing neutral does is charge the TC and all circuits completly and quickly instead of competing for pressure and volume used to apply the clutch packs. On a stiock trans that is significant.

Do your self a favor. Save up and spend the money to get it done right the 1st time. You will be happy you did it for long haul! I am. Regarding what builder to go with all you need to do is hit the SEARCH tab above and you will have all the reading material you will need. My ATS is going strong for over 60,000 miles and I'm driving my casket.
