Jacobs Site Update

"January 26, 2005 UPDATE: The Jacobs Exhaust Brake for 2004. 5 and 2005 model years is NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE at Dodge Ram dealers. See your local Dodge dealer and order Mopar part number 82208835AB, or see the nearest Cummins Distributor and order Cummins part number 4955192. The 2003 and 2004 model year Jacobs Exhaust brakes are available from Cummins Distributors only, under the part number 4089427. "

I noticed that on the Jakebrake site, they state that an exhaust brake is available for the 2004. 5 with 48RE, but, "Dodge and Cummins have identified vehicle control system and hardware changes that are necessary before factory approval is given to this application. "

Do we know what these are and the costs?

What serial number start the so called 2004. 5 year model? What happened to the requirement of changing out the reverse thrust bearing?

Frank

I'm pretty sure that the quote in #461 above refers to the availability of Jacobs exhaust brakes for the manual transmissions only. Note that in later 2005 / early 2005, all Jacobs brakes for the 600/610's were taken off the market for a redesign. Read through this thread for the latest news on exhaust brakes for the autos. The only thing I have heard for sure is that the exhuast brakes are available for the 2006 autos, but no word on previous years retrofit.

Here is the summary of 48RE / Exhaust Brake options:

MY03-MY04. 5: Not warranty approved; powertrain computer exhaust brake functionality is enabled but no automatic transmission protection.

MY05: Not warranty approved; powertrain computer exhaust brake features completely disabled.

MY06: Warranty approved; full powertrain computer protection/integration w/brake.

It is possible that there will be an update to the MY05 software, but there has been no commitment to do so. It will be many months if it does happen at all. Hope this clarifies things.

Carlton, What does that mean? Does it mean that I can have the EB installed and the functionality for use will be enabled in the transmission but no warranty? Or does it mean the functionality is already there and I can just have the EB installed?

I don't know if you are still monitoring this thread but I wanted to know if DC has come up with software for '05 w/48RE yet. If not, do you think there is still any chance they will. I've been waiting since I bought my '05 in Nov. 2004.

I said this before and I am going to say it again! When I purchased my 2003 I was told that DC would more than likely approve a exhaust brake for the 03 later on. I feel that DC mislead consumers, and they should step up to the plate and do whatever they need to make all trucks from 2003 with the 48RE approved for a E-Brake! And I don't care if anyone disagrees with me or not on this subject. We who have a 2003 or any other model that DC doesn't want to approve are getting screwed... plain and simple!! :p

Yeah, I got the same Song and Dance when I bought my 04. 5 and am in the same boat. the only thing we can do is learn from our experences and take them at face value... unless its in writting, don't believe them.

Exhaust Brake

Please Mr Bale give us a update on the standing of the software for the brake for the 2005 48RE. As I have posted in the past, a dealer installed the brake on my truck after telling me it would work on my truck with my permission, after installing it Service called me to say it would not work and they had read the Mopar parts info wrong. After much discussion they left it on the truck on the expectation that the software would be available for my truck by May of this year. Now I am told they do not know when and if it will ever by able to be used on my truck. I love the truck and love the Cummins even more and pull a heavy 5th wheel as fulltime RVer, the brake would make my truck a super truck for my use. Now the dealer says they will take it off for me but will not refund the cost because they cannot resell the brake or get a refund for it from Mopar. Without the software to operate the brake I am caught between the rock and the hard place. Chrysler told me they would not warranty engine if it was hooked up to operate manually. Buyer beware, however the Parts manager, Service Manager and Service Technican all told me it would work before I gave them the ok to install it, all were wrong. I have e-mailed Cummins, Dodge, Chrysler and Jake brake folks and have received a reply from only Jake brake folks that would love to help me but cannot because it is a Dodge issue.

MP,

Just ask for your money back, take them to small claims court they are the experts and should of investigated this better. We haven't had Carlton reply to this thread in a while. It was probably more for P. R. while the program was being put together. If you read back in this thread our computers don't have enough memory for the software download. Wil the dealer warranty the truck as it sits? If so you may want to think about a torgue converter lock up unit ATS or other. I wouldn't be using it the way it is due to no garrantee on the lock up. You could try calling Jacobs and track him down that way.

Told by a salesman who didn't know his product line and wanted to make a sale and found a few people that believed him. Sorry their has to be people like this (salesmen).

Emphasis mine. How does one interpret "more than likely" to mean "getting screwed"? :-{}

I have been following exhaust brake threads and reading Dodge websites and literature since 2001, and the only thing I have ever read as far as an official position from Dodge is "not approved with automatic transmissions". :confused:

Actually, Carlton said the 05's do have enough memory - this was confirmed by the tech at my local dealer. He checked and said there was no reason the 05's can't be flashed for the e-brake update- its just a matter of Dodge making the software available to do it (the 06 overdrive lockout feature could be flashed into the 05's too). Sounded like the 03's are not exhaust brake upgradable that way and I think (but not sure) that he said the same for the 04's.

I was told my 05 was exhaust brake compatible and was disappointed to find its not. I wish Dodge would consider customer service when it comes to something like this that gets a lot of goodwill for something that should be relatively easy to do. But I guess that's not their top priority. The dealer tech said not to hold my breath on getting an update so I guess if I want an exhaust brake I'll end up going to a BD Autoloc(?).

More than likely is misleading to whom... we who bought the product or those who sold the product? I would like to think of myself as a person who takes someone for there word... and in this case they didn't even try do anything about resolving this problem. Hence... getting screwed!

... but if Dodge corporate never made the claim, why should it be their problem. If Dodge does come up with a fix, great, but they are not obligated to do so. If a dealer says that you can tow 20,000 lbs with a 2500 Hemi, and the truck breaks, should Dodge corporate be held responsible? I have never heard of any vehicle manufacturer ever promising to add a feature to a vehicle after you take delivery.

The truck brakes are great, the trailer still has drum brakes which are prone to fading if they get hot. If I need to stop in a hurry I want the trailer brakes in good condition.

I bought a PacBrake but the there was interference between the brake and engine. I put on the BD Performance brake with TowLoc. A lot better than stock, but not perfect due to the operation of the software in the Dodge.

I'd much rather take a chance on buying a transmission repair than not have good brakes at the bottom of Cajon pass.

Just my two pesos.

Blowing the dust off an oldy...

Is there any hope whatsoever that the reflash for '05 48RE will be completed? It sounded like it was imminent, then all went silent. At this point I guess it's just water under the bridge, but I thought I would ask anyway. :{
