One other solution to the the EB problem is installing Disc brakes on the trailer. They would be a lot more efficent than the drum brakes that are there now! That way when going down a hill apply a little more braking to the trailer.

Well, gentlepersons, it looks like I bought mine about 1 year to early.

According to this story,
The exhaust brake offered by the Mopar parts division that’s available for dealer installation is now certified for both manual and automatic transmissions and won’t void the warranty. The brake delivers 170 brake hp at 3,000 rpm, and we highly recommend exhaust brakes on diesels pulling heavy trailers. New logic in the automatic allows it to lock up the torque converter, under certain conditions, in fourth, third and second gears to aid control.

Too bad they won't extend that to all the 48REs. :(

That trailer life article was probably written weeks or months ago, and only seems to repeat what I've read in other articles that were later proven to be false. That said, I really hope it is true, because I've put off getting a new truck in hopes they would certify the EB with auto before I order...

By the way, I spoke with the editor of Trailer Life last week; he owns a Ram with a Cummins engines. There will be a statement in next months magazine stating that the brake is not yet approved for the 48RE.

I think they are still working on it.....

Has anyone installed the BD engine brake with there TowLoc with the 48RE trans?

I have decided that I am not going to worry about the DC warrantee and just build the truck I want. So this is the route I thought I would go. So any feedback is appreciated.

You may want to look at upgrading your T/C & VB First ,some of the add ons just cannot make up the different situation's that a exhaust brake creates or you may end up removing the add ons because of incompatibly.

TWest,

Yes I have thought about upgrading the Torq-Convertor, there are several out there that should handle the job, but for now I am going to try with out. If I have anysign of troulbe I'll upgrade it right away. For what it's worth I have spoken to the folks at BD Power and they say the stock Tq Convertor should handle it ?

btw what is a VB?

Valve body,The VB&TC are the weakest links in the dodge transmission,Once you upgrade these the the 47re/48re are capable of handling 825 LBS of torque and up to 400 hp with longevity and durability.

I read in this Months "Truck Trend Magazine" that the 325/600 with the 48RE was E/B approved by DC, and is now ready to be ordered with the E/B . I wonder who gave the writer that info!

As of Thursday afternoon it was not in the computer as an option for a 3500 with a 48re. I just placed my order, so I hope it is available in the next week so I can add it.

Also, just received my "Trailer Life" magazine. Where they corrected their Apil issue by stating that the 48RE was not ready for use with the E/B!

New Member 1st Diesel

HELP!! SOS!! Hi, new member here. I purchased my 1st diesel 7/03, Dodge Ram 3500 SRW CTD 235 hp Automatic, with all the goodies. LOVE IT. Questions?? I want the HO or "600", now that it is available in Massachusetts. Can someone tell me if there is a "real" power difference. Are there major component differences. (or just "computer chip" type ) differences. What actually was used to get the hp and torque? Could use the extra power pulling snowmobiles from Boston to Canada. I went out to Ford dealers, the last couple of days and checked out the power stroke, (i've been driving Internationals, Mack, Ford for 20 yrs (Power line Bucket Trucks), I'M STAYING WITH DODGE. I'm back to Dodge dealers. Is there anything new for the '05s?? I can't find info anywhere????. I'm came close to buying '04 H. O. ( I would LOVE!!!! to have a (Jake Brake), what the latest for automatic?????????? I need to know if they do come out with a Jake Brake for automatic, what year truck it would be compatible with, ('04, '05)?? I don't what a '04 if there's something new (good) for '05. I want to here from the real diesel people. Please, feedback would be great. Thanks in advance, Dan

Looks like we're in the same boat. There's definitely no guarantees for '05, but so far no E/B certification for autos on 04. 5's, and since we're so close to 05, I think I'm just going to wait. I sold my '99 a month ago, so this is torture living without a truck, but I think in the end I'll be happy once I have the Cummins back in my driveway.

Why not upgrade the transmission, and not wait on DC.

Because, while I plan to DTT my transmission eventually, the point of a 70K drivetrain warranty is that I don't have to spend any $$ fixing it! And I don't want this to be null and void because of an E/B.

Thanks JeepDude for my 1st reply. I was told by dealers that production of the '04 s would be ending in a few weeks or so and production of the '05 s would begin in around July. I was going to order an '04 and was told it would be 12wks for delivery and I could possible receive an '05. (not wanting an '05 at the time. )
