Can you please clairify if the thrust washer we have talked about is the only thrust washer. In other words, is it under load on accell AND decell?

JRG,

The revised thrust washer that went into production earlier this year only receives significant loading when the exhaust is engage and the vehicle is decelerating. There is not significant loading during deceleration without an exhaust brake installed or during acceleration.

Carlton,

Is there much loading on the older (03. 5) thrust washers during decelleration even without using an RB - when manually selecting a lower gear, for example?

No, there is not much loading on the washer in any vehicle unless there is an exhaust brake installed. The loading is actually the same for the new thrust washer but it was redesigned to handle the load from the exhaust brake.

Sounds like for those that are willing to be their own warranty station or add the EB after warranty is up we could change the washer and make sure the trans is in lock up before using the EB and end up with the same reliability as what is being worked on.

How do you know whether the trans is locked up or not?

You can program the lockup with a commander, Many company's have them some are better than other. I known they work good because I have one,I also have latch relay switch on my accelerator pedal, so when I flip the exhaust switch and let off on the pedal the brake automatically engages , Down to 24 MPH ,when I put my foot back on the pedal the exhaust brake automatically disengages.

I AM STILL LOOKING TO PUT ON A ENGINE BRAKE,When some one will make one. then you could keep your brake on to maybe 8 MPH, and get away from all the hassle a exhaust brake makes.

wouldnt and engine brake also load the transmission the same way and exhaust brake does?? and you would still need the converter to lock or all u do is shear the transmission fluid and make heat.

You can program the lockup with a commander.

This is true, you can program lockup with an external box, but that doesn't buy you anything beyond what the stock configuration offers as far a brake capability goes. The problem is not commanding lock-up because the control module can do that very easily. The problem is knowing that lock-up is actually achieved after it is commanded -- because if it is not, bad things will happen! I've discussed this a few times before in this thread so I won't go into the details again. . .

I agree Mr Bale, the Disengagement is the problem and BAD THINGS WILL RESULT. Yes , It is allot more effective to monitor a engine brake. and much easier to control.

So my options with my '03. 5 4x4 with 48RE are:

1) Slow down when towing my 5er, keep it out of OD to lock up in 3rd; if needed go to 2nd or 1st. No problems with washer!

2) put on an EB with controller and valve body, but sooner or later rebuild the T/C and transmission at my $$$$ expense.

3) slow down when towing my 5er. . . . . .

Thanks for the details Carlton!! Really helps to know how it works.

Just got back from a test drive,

Funny thing was the sales man said you can get a EB and still be under warrenty, I told him to check out this web page and this tread.

After getting to know your truck you will begin to feel when it is locked and unlocked.

Thats not a good way though as it leaves room for driver error and is the reason they are working on a more fool proof method.

I would assume they should be able to monitor existing crank speed signals and reference them to existing transmission speed signals so the ECM will know if its locked or not.

Seems like an opportunity there for the aftermarket to come up with a box that will watch those two sensors and allow EB only when 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears match up.

Carlton... .

Sorry for bringing up old info and thanks again for all you time and courtesy in keeping TDR members informed.
