Just for fun, how about a poll on miles racked up so far on the 48RE's since they are so new.....

I will go first:

10,000 here towing 6,000 and am satisfied so far.

Almost 20K miles-Perfect!

My wife's 03 truck is perfect and getting better fuel mileage as we get more miles on it (almost 20K). Have to say my 02 3500 is great too w/ 33K miles on it.

Dodge/Cummins is bad to the bone!

I see you have an EZ, I'm thinking about getting one and have been concerned about the 48RE.

Glad it's doing well.

48RE

I got 4,400 on my 48re. It's in the shop. The overdrive quit working on it.

1,200 miles with no towing. The transmission cooler had to be replaced at about 500. I think it was a faulty cooler rather than a transmission problem.

Was it leaking or was there some other symptom?

Please keep us in the loop on this, if it is an electrical fault or more serious... thanks

I had my first problem with my truck yesterday. (25,000+ miles) As luck would have it it was in the transmission. The truck wouldn't shift into overdrive or lock up the TC. I limped into my dealer with the truck. They had the problem corrected in a few hours. It seems that there were a couple of pins coming from the ECM to the transmission that had not been fully seated at the factory. That was about 250 miles ago and the problem is gone. It does seem that the 50mph lockup has moved up to about 53mph.

±16,000 now. The valve body gave up the ghost at 7,500 miles, but I haven't had a problem since. The 48RE is a big improvement over the 47RE I had in my '01. 5, but I sure wish the wife could drive a 6-speed :) Maybe it's time for some trans BOMBS!!!???

Cool Jay,

Sounds like a factory harness assembly mistake and the trans itself was not the problem but was just affected by it. can't really blame the trans on that one.

We have nearly 9,000 miles on our 48RE hauling at max GVW 95% of the time with many of those miles in the mountains. I love the 2nd gear lockup feature in the mountains going up the steep grades with 15 MPH switchbacks. No problems what so ever!!:D

I don't like the "sloppy" torque converter and am saving my $$ for James (inarush76) to cure that problem.

I have a Mag-Hytec DD pan on the workbench ready to go on at the first service at 15,000 miles. I am going to service the 48RE at the same interval as the rear axle.

This truck is our 4th Dodge/Cummins, 3 with the automatic transmissions, and none of the automatics have given any trouble towing at or over the max GCW and hauling at max GVW. I don't turn up the engine power and service the transmission religiously on a 15,000 to 20,000 mile interval using OEM parts and fluid.

I've owned brand F and C trucks with automatics and never had any automatic transmission troubles with them either towing heavy loads. I drove some of them in excess of 200K miles. They too got serviced at the 15-20K intervals.

My dually is up over 35k miles with no problems. It hauls a 10-15k trailer everyday for a living. The QC is up to 20k miles and tows less but still, not a single problem with anything on either truck.

I got into it a little with the Chevy guys. They are full of bad info over there(jealous:rolleyes: ) The argument was how poor the Dodge transmission's are. Well... they don't look too bad so far;) Of course, I'm the guy that got 200k out of the 4R100 in my Ford when lots of other guys were melting nthem down. Regular services certainly help, and I religiously do them.

Five Dodges I have owned. NO trans problems. I sold a 1990 350 srw with a 360 to a guy who shreded the auto. in it within a month. Said he towed heavy(10k) but I did to. I just drove easy and didn't floor it and let it slam into the next gear etc. He broke it bad.
