UPDATE: The problem was a malfuntioning wiring harness. They replaced the wire harness and all is well for now.

I have run the **** out of mine, 31,000 miles since June. Pulled the Hill out of Las Vegas up into the MoJave, with an 11,000 Lb enclosed car trailer. Reached speeds up to 85 miles per hour. The same going back over Donner pass and up I-80 east of Salt Lake. No problems, turbo stayed cool, outside temp was 30-40's.

When the truck started to dog down into the 70's I shut the over drive off and it kicked up the rpm's then up shifted. This put the motor back into the torque band and the truck just pulled up those hills like a bat out of hell.

I stayed in the fast lane most of the time even though the sorry state of California say's we must stay in the right lane at 55 mph. They must have made that law for the slower Fords and Chevy's

GETTING READY TO PASS THE 10K MILE MARKER AND NARY A PROBLEM. PULLING A 32FT WILDERNESS 5TH WHEEL AND LIKE OTHERS, HAVING TROUBLE STAYING IN THE SLOW LANE... ;)

RECOMMEND THE 48RE FOR A SMOOTHE RIDE... ... ... ... ... ...

At 4,350 mi. towing 27 ft. 5th . wheel my 48re didn't want to go into overdrive. Had to tap the accelerator at about 60 mph. to make it shift . Did this several times on trip home. Dealer flashed the PCM as per TSB #18-027-03. Haven't towed since then so hope it's fixed. Other than that , like it fine.

So far so good... :) 11,500 miles without any problems. Probably 3,000 of it towing. Plan on servicing at 15k. As for now, all is

8400 Miles... . According to the dealer the leaky transmission was due to an incorrectly milled torque converter that cut the main pump seal.

I just changed my Fuel Filter today, and have 14,355! The transmission is shifting better than I am... lol

midlife crisis

Do you mean the reflash I had done was for the 47RE. Dealer service didn't tell me that ,just said it sounded like what they were doing the reflash for. It didn't help, the next time I towed it did the same thing . I am hoping the powertrain control module recall will eliminate the problem although they didnt replace it. Service said they had never found one corroded yet which leads me to believe they are NOT going to find corrosion. Service manager tried to tell me the automatics really wern't made to tow. That Didn't go over very well. Thanks for the Info.

I had the reflash done on my S/O with 47RE. It's the same flash and cures the same problem. (delayed O/D and low power) The difference is the 48 sets a code and the 47 doesn't for low power. I can tell the difference running empty but haven't towed after the flash. FWIW, I have almost 28,000 on my 47 with no problems. I liked the program in my '01. 5 better but apparently others didn't. My '01. 5 and 95 47s were also trouble free with the exception of a governor pressure sensor in the '01. 5. That caused some erratic shifting even when sitting still. But the trans itself was in good shape even though I had been towing 900 lbs over GCVWR. A crooked trans shop could have charged me for a rebuild and I would have been added to the Dodge trannies are junk club. But the dealership was honest and I was back in business. :D

What is the general feeling for using OD when towing. Never, or maybe with a moderate load on level ground. This is one of the main reasons I have stayed with manual transmission 'cause I can tow in OD.

I use OD on level ground and some slight inclines at speeds of 60-65 with 6000 lbs. I have the auto and 3. 73's with 33" tall tires.

If I drop below 60 or hit a steeper grade I switch it off.

I have 15K on my 48re with no trouble at all and just added 65hp-200tq with a VA box and it seems to handle it real well.

I can't address the "general feeling" but can say that the only times that mine isn't in OD is when I'm decellerating or when the cruise control downshifts. :D

No pain, no strain, pulling at GCWR!

When I had the 15K mile service done there was no indication of unusual wear or load.

:) almost 6000 miles, no towing, but lots of mountain back-roads, some city and some highway driving, no problems with anything so far. Ok, I would have hoped for a bit more from the stereo and nav, but it's miles beyond my Furd in fit, finish, and available options and materials. I love this truck.
