I have a 2005 dodge cumins with a hypertech max energy and BD boost fooler I do a lot of towing ranging from 2000 to 10000 pounds. I also do a lot of plowing. I have 90000 miles on the truck. I'm wondering if I should install a shift kit and if there is and other transmission mods to make. Also what is the best shift kit to get for the 48re.

I subscribed to this thread since I'm interested. I get a headache just looking at all of the transmission posts. I just want something simple to help the longevity of my transmission without spending $4,000 to $6,000

Shift kit

Billet band strut and anchor

Billet front servo

Billet accumulator

Remove drain back check ball

Updated gov pressure solenoid

These will help immensely with a good trans and a worn trans to handle extra power and just live longer. They can all be done without removing the transmission, only the VB.

What none of these can do is address the rear servo which is also iffy on selaing and fit, or, the front band which will get hit hard with extra power and reduce TQ management.

If you tow heavy or want to thrash on things the OE TC is simply not going to handle the extra presures and power. They will start twisting the cover and walking the TC bolts on the flex plate. Keeping them tight is something that needs to be periodically checked with the addition of pressure and power.

Thanks for the info. Where is the best place to get the stuff. What brand shift kit is reccomended. I've read that the DTT kit has very violent shifts. I've also read that the transgo kit requires you to grind on valve body so you can't remove shift kit without replacing valve body.

Any shift kit can be setup to be hard, medium or soft. A lot has to do with the clutches\steels along with the accumulator. I am running in excess of 200 psi at full throtle shifts and they are just positive not voilent.

The TransGo is intrusive, you can't go back from them. They work pretty good but they are single use and then you have to replace pieces to change things. The Superior kit does about the same thing and is reversible. DTT has the pieces to build a shift kit also.

If you call DTT they set you up with all these pieces and provide some pretty good feedback on how to install.

If you feel adventurous all the pieces are here and you will need to figure out where and how yourself. PATC 46RE 47RE 48RE Transmissions, Performance Transmission A518, 518

transmission cooler drain back valve

By removing the transmission drain back valve will I encounter any fluid drain back issues that will cause problems. Will it drain back every time I shut the truck off and will it be something that will be irritating to deal with if it does drain back. Also what is the best way to remove the check ball can I remove a cooler line and pull ball out.

The drian back ball is there because the transmission doesn't circulate fluid in park and the perception is of a problem if people cannot fire the engine and drive off in the same motion. There is also a seal the stops the drainback but it wears a after time. 30 second sin neutral will remedy this but the perception is hard to ignore.

Its also a bit ridiculous to jump in a vehicle and engage gear right after the engine fires. Give a minute to get settled in and oil pressure up before taking off and it will serve you much better. When a shift kit is installed the typical installation takes care of the no circulate in park so as soon as the engine fires it is charging the TC. You should have no issues if you normally give the engine a minute to settle in on start up.

Wanted to chime in a bit on the drainback . Just put two new lines in, the transmission shop said they always remove the check ball but I had reasoned I`d dig it out later . Will it acually run cooler when it is drilled out?
