Ok, So far I'm happy. PortJeff Ram did a really nice job putting the truck back together. I have yet to find any missing things or loose parts. The truck is running much better very diff sound, more turbo sound, more snappy throttle. I have yet to put more than 130 miles on it, I've been helping my friend pack and move so my trips have been un-usally short the past week so I can't comment on the MPG just yet. PortJeff has one TEC that knows his stuff, clean and neat is the best way to describe his work.

I finally got some good towing in over the last week or so. First a ~200 mile round trip out to the desert to play with the quad. Two Quads on my 16' flatbed for a total weight around 3,000 lbs. Not a lot but good for breaking it in (finally). Then a trip out to the coast with the 37' 5th wheel, probably 15,000 lbs and a 300 miles of towing and another 100 farting around. The mixed driving neted 10. 4 on paper and was pretty close to the meter guestimate.

I've made the trip out to the coast with the same trailer and my '06 5. 9. All I can say is there is NO comparison. The 5. 9 got about 1 - 1. 5 mpg better mileage but the new truck handles the tow so much better. It is an apples and oranges comparison. The 5. 9 was a 2500 Quad Cab Short Bed and the new is a 3500 Crew long bed.

Hills that required full throttle on the 5. 9 can be taken on cruise control now. The exhaust brake is much more seamless on the 6. 7 and the extra 2 gears makes a HUGE difference.

Yeah, I kinda wish I would have waited for the '13 but this will do just fine. It could be my last truck.

You don't suppose going to a DRW long box had anything to do with the improvement in towing? That 6spd auto would be nice empty.

Absolutely no question the dual rear is most of the difference, the +20 or so inches of wheelbase didn't hurt either.
I was also having issues backing up with the 48RE, they're gone with the 68.
The 5er is about 12,000 empty.

hey Sorry that I haven't been able to post anything sooner, I've been helping a friend move. Alot of short trips too much stop and go and no miles. But I've now got about 600 miles on it since the two injectors were replaced and the computer was re flashed. The Re Gen cycles are now happening anywhere from 1. 5 hours to 3,5 hours between each Much better than the every 45 min that was happening with the leaking injectors. But my MPG is still only about 15. 5 better than the 13 that I was getting but far from what the 18-20 MPG the 05 I had use to get. I'm still thinking about the 2013 with the DEF system.....

I bought a 2010 in April of this year. Tows my boat (~7K) like it's not even there. I just drove from St. Paul to Detroit and back this past weekend and it's a comfortable cruiser.

Mileage stinks though. I used to get 22MPG with my 2003CTD unloaded on the highway. The best I could do this trip was 17. 5.

Generally happy with this one, though. It's my third.

The EGR system stays on the 13's. Advantage of DEF is that the engine can be tuned to run more efficant making less soot. However when a diesel runs the way it was ment to it makes more NO2 emmissions this is where the DEF comes in to break dow the NO2 back into Nitorgen and O2. and water vapor. Less soot so less Re-Gen better MPG... . In theory.

Ok, first oil change since the leaking injectors were changed. It was nice to see only 11 and a half qts this time not the 14 qts I had last time. The Re-Gen cycles have been happening between 1 3/4 and 4 1/2 hours. The EGR valve does not flutter open and closed like it use to. All in all the truck has never run better. I'm guessing the injectors were bad from day one. Fuel MPG is still only 15-16 MPG. Question has anyone given the ROTEC crank sensor a try on these 6. 7 engines? The ROTEC was a modified sensor that allowed the engine timing to be advanced about 1. 5-2 degrees with out the computer knowing..... Just a thought to help the MPG's...

Ed, I really appreciate your updates. My truck only has 3400 miles and I'm getting in the 13 to 15 range. I'd be happy with 15-16. My previous 04. 5 usually got in the 16 to 17 range. I knew what I was getting into with this new truck so not complaining though. :)

wyosteve did you have your speedo re calabrated? the dealer just has to tell the computer the tire size for it to read correct. Stock 265's to the 285's are about a 3 to 4% diff in size not much but enough to change the MPG caculations a bit.

Ed, I didn't have the speedo re-calibrated, but based on GPS speeds, I'm off about 6% so I do factor that into the mileage figures.

Ok. Well like alot of us have been saying about the new trucks the whole idea of using more fuel to make less emmissions really sucks. I miss my 02 and my 05 for that reason. but this 12 is one nice truck to drive. Maybe someday when the 13's are released things will be better?

I debated waiting for a '13, but even with the claimed 10% better mileage and fewer oil changes, it would take a long time, if ever, to recoup the price difference between the '12 and '13. Plus, I don't have a lot of confidence in the first year release of a new platform. You are right when you say the '12 is sure a nice truck to drive compared to the 04. 5

Just got back from a trip to the high desert. Only the third big pull for the truck and 14,000 lb 5th wheel but the more I pull with this truck the more I like it. I had a 5% grade to pull and it went up at 60 mph with no issues and coming home it went down it at 62 mph and no brakes, just exhaust brake. The mileage indicator is also showing improvement as it gets a good break-in. Last trip was 8. 6 MPG (penciled out @ 8. 5) and this was 9. 0 with about the same up/down terrain. I'll do the pencil calc when I fill it up.

By my calculations this 12 has cost $745. 00 more to run than the 05 that I had in it's first 10,000 miles of use. If I project that out for the same 200,000 miles that I had on the 05 that's $14,900. 00 more in just 7 years of ownership. I'm gonna see how bad the local dealer wants to sell a new truck, if the numbers are right then this 12 is as good as traded in. as for this being the first year with the new system... . The emmissions system has been in use on the chassie cab trucks for a long time now is quite proven. Only the new suspenshion has yet to be proven, though it looks very much like the Ford system.....

The 13 is not the same system as the CC ;)
