4th Gen Intercooler

Hey all,

Has anyone Changed out the intercooler on there 4th gen and if so did you have to have the A/C drained and refilled or where you about to just move the Condenser off to the side and support it with something so it isn't hanging on the lines?

I am wanting to do this this weekend but not if i have to deal with the A/C.

I recommend you check with the intercooler manufacturer. Also check YouTube, Mishimoto had a video of the one for my 2009 4500 I installed. What do the insructions say that came with your intercooler?

BTW, on both my 2003 2500 and 2009 4500, I was able very carefully swing out of the way and hold back with a ratchet strap.

Which one are you putting on?

So this is actually going to be going from factory to factory. I can't justify (right now) spending the cash on an upgrade when I can get an all aluminum factory unit for 100$(already have) just wanting to install.

I've emailed mishimoto about there 3rd gen install and they said that the 4ths should be the same way. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow after I finish some yard work and see if maybe it won't look too bad.

If I end up tackling the job I'll post a write up and pictures on it and the steps I took.

Be real careful with the ac lines. the aluminum piping crimps pretty easy. What happened to the original on your truck.

Ran over a tree branch in the road a few years ago and had a shop fix it up buts it's started leaking, about 3-5psi. Doesn't really affect mileage or power too much but thought it'd be a good idea to replace it anyways.

Bigtime! you may want an intercooler and radiator protector from Genos. I also installed a grill guard. We have deer and wild hogs bad down here.

Well that was kinda a freak deal, it was right after a big storm and was really windy and I just couldn't afford the branch. It was branch or another car I chose branch lol. Now with the bigger turbo and upgrades it was only time before I knew it'd get worse.

Honestly though I wish I would've run the fleece cheetah instead of my stainless diesel swap so I could still have my exhaust brake but hey, able to hit 55lbs on a good day ain't too bad either lol

One thing that surprised me about the 4th Gens is how small the intercoolers are. But, they work well.

Yeah little crazy. I've looked at trying to get a 3rd gen 6.7 intercooler but no luck finding a cheap one to test with

So i ended up taking the truck to a local shop and worked with them to get this replaced. I tried to get pictures but ended up getting distracted and forgot.

Over- all it took about 2hrs to get this replaced. You do have to remove the A/C lines and condenser from the truck so your going to need an A/C machine. The front bumper and brackets have to be removed as well because you can't pull the inter-cooler out with the frame bumper brackets in the way. Overall it was a pretty simple job and I'd do it again in a heart beat once an aftermarket inter-cooler hits my lap lol.

Also, The 3rd Gen Inter-coolers or thicker early year 6.7l coolers wont fit the 10-12 6.7ls. the bolt patterns are different for the condenser and doesn't offer the right support.
