Good day all. I have a question about the 4x4 dash light on my 03 ram. The 4x4 is the shift on the fly and I was using the 4x4 this week and now the light will go out when the truck is in 4x4 and when you shift to 2x4 the light will come on. any ideas what is going on whit this truck?

Thanks Keith :)

Kieth, both t cases are shift on the fly. You either have maual lever or push button electric. Either way if the 4x4 light doesn't indicate the correct range, I would guess that the switch has a short.

Not sure if that was any help.

This isn't meant to sound condescending, but are you sure you know if you're in four wheel drive? I was alittle shocked when I got my new truck - the transfer case shift pattern is 4HI - 2HI - N - 4LO. On my 2nd Gen it was 2HI - 4HI - N - 4LO.

Now maybe you can see where some of the confusion is!

If it's a knob type, it's probably a short as mentioned above.

Kieth,

I have had the same issue for a year. Everytime someone gets in my truck they are kind enough to let me know that I am in 4WD. I then have to explain about the sending unit being bad. and ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Well, you get the picture. I have a new sending unit but haven't put it on yet.

Guess my sending unit is bad. I have the exact situation described above occurring today. Used my truck in 4x4 for about 5 minutes. Now when I put it back into 2H it says 4x4 and when I put it in 4H or 4L it doesn't show a thing. Showing a P0837 code = Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Switch Performance/Rationality. :(

Here is what amnual says about error:

Symptom:

P0837-4WD MUX SWITCH PERFORMANCE

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P0837-4WD MUX SWITCH PERFORMANCE

When Monitored: Continuously with the ignition on.

Set Condition: The 4WD muxed switch input detected in an invalid range or irrational

switch state.

Everything seems to be working fine. Had to deal with some more snow tonight and when I put it into 4 wheel drive the 4x4 light went off, 4WD worked great. Took it out of four wheel drive and the 4x4 light comes back on again. I need to tow a load down to California and back and the truck seems to functioning perfectly. Do I need to be worried about taking a trip (1,500 miles fairly heavy load)with this light on when everything seems to be functioning normally? I am leaning towards this being the sensor. Where is the transfer case position sensor?
