What kind of fuel mileage are you guys getting?I dont think I have ever goten over 16 mpg. I get around 14 driveing around town and short trips. Is this normal?I thought it would be better.

------------------
1998. 5 4x4 cummins auto.
Flame red SLT.
3. 54 gears.
2inch front leveling kit.
285/75/16 Country squire radial R/T tires on stock chrome wheels.
JVC cd player.
lots of stainless and aluminum trim.
4 inch exhaust turbo back straight piped.
K@N filter.
electronic speedo recalibrator.
Aluminum 120 gallon service tank and tool box combo. VA

I get 14. 8 in town and 17 on the hiway, unloaded. Would like it to be better, but auto and 4x4 both hurt mileage.

Remember, if you are calculating very short trips - where the truck never gets a chance to travel at sustained speed in top gear, 14 mpg isn't all that bad. Under these conditions you are constanly accelerating - which will never net very favorable mileage results. Driving around town can mean two completely different things for different people. In the middle of LA, I can hit a traffic light every 150 yards, 14 wouldn't be so bad under these conditions.
If I calculate my mileage from the time I get on the freeway to the time I get off, I can do around 19 depending on how fast I drive. But that doesn't include any time on the surface streets - which instantly brings down the average. Just some tings to think about. Good luck,
Craig

16. 5 around town. Not a whole lot better on the highway [ wife says I drive to fast ] #ad

19. 5 in town, 19. 2 on highway I find that if I travel above 70 mph. the mileage drops, as far as driving below 70 mph. I haven't tried it's one of the great perks of living in this great state lots of wide open space.

Stubbe: Most of the time I get 20-21. 5 on highway trips with '96 Ram, 5sp. 3. 54s, 4x4. I use Amsoil throughout. Drive 65-67, 2000rpm or slightly less. I use premium Roadmaster diesel from Cenex. The fuel makes a difference. Some other brands and straight #2 offer decreased mileage in my truck. Jerry.

My driving is a combination of city and highway, and I don't baby it! (75-80 on hwy) My last tank I got just over 18 mpg. Usually around 17. 75 mpg. Once I only got 15. 75 on a tank. I certainly can't complain, just sold my 88 Chevy van that only got about 9-12 mpg.

Average around 17 empty. Most of my driving consists of a 30 mile commute. I work evening shift and often as not have my foot in it. Drops down to around 15 towing. Truck weighs 7600 empty.

I get about 17 when I fill up. That's usually a combination of highway and city driving. Quad cab 4x4 with 4. 10 gears and 255/85R16 tires. That's figuring in 10% for the bigger tires. If I'm really on it in town for a full tank it dropps to a little over 15. I got 18 on the highway once. But only once. Usually like the throttle too much. #ad
Pulling a 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer I get 12.

Unloaded, highway, 60-65MPH averages 26. 5 MPG. In town, 23. 5 MPG . Truck is stock except for K&N filter. Imperial gallons are about 1/5 greater in volume - so - that would make it about 21. 5 MPG (US) and around 18. 5 MPG(US) in town, if my calculations are on. I avoid extreme acceleration and keep my foot out of it as much as possible. Fuel economy was one of the important reasons I decided on the Cummins.

All miles running basically empty.

According to computer 16. 5 mpg around town.

Calculated 18. 1 mpg this past weekend on round trip from Fayetteville to Conway to Heber Springs, AR and back. 580 miles. 350 miles was I540 and I40 at 75-80 mph. Rest was US65, AR25, and other state highways at 45-60 mph.

At 2500 rpm running 75 mph thanks to 4. 10 gears.

MPG has improved as miles are added to truck. Might be as good as it is going to get - might not. Added K&N a few days before trip.

The Mule gets 19. 5 around town, use 5th gear when I hit 50-55 mph. Hiway went down to 18. 5 used to get 20 to 21. Think drop is do to stickier tires.

Much wisdom in cjohnson and other posts. Little differences add up to big differences in mpg, especially driving style and speed.
I've seen low's in the 13. 's (headwinds + load + hills + speed + wind loading from boats up on on roof racks) to high of 21. 5 (no load, some secondary roads at 60 mph + some freeway at 65 mph, light foot all the way).
Yesterday, I left the engine and A/C running while I changed a tire. Trip computer dropped from 19. 2 to 17. 6 just due to the idling while I changed the tire. Drove with very soft foot the rest of the day, got 20. 1 overall for that tank. I'm sure I would have been over 21. 5 if not for that #&%&$ piece of steel that took out my sidewall! I find the trip computer, even though somewhat inaccurate, really helps me to milk the most out of a tank of diesel. So far, my best estimates of mostly freeway miles:
18. 0 at 70 mph (just below 2000 rpm)
20. 0 at 65 mph
Currently have about 8700 miles on my truck (one month old). So far, no synthetics, no performance related mods. Signature shows other specifics on my truck. I should mention that these are the numbers I get when I really milk it; if I just pay no attention to the trip computer and drive, subtract 1 to 2 mpg!
Should your mileage be better? I don't know - how fast do you go, how many stoplights in your town, etc etc etc.

I have a 22 mile commute each way to work 20% city 80% Hiway. I run right at 20. 9 - 21. 4 depending on my lead foot. freeway only run on trips empty running at 80 MPH this summer I have got as hi as 23. 8, but normally around 22. 5. Towing my house trailer 24' Great Divide I get 14. 8 - 15. 8, I do drive slower when towing (70 - 75max).

The biggest improvements to my milage have been loosing the cat and the Psycotty Air system. Both together are good for 1. 5 MPG.

With 2700 miles my beast is getting 16 mpg in town and 18. 5 highway at 75 mph. After i do all the synthetic fluids and put more miles on I think I should see 17 and 20 which is great for a big beast. When I pull my 7600 lb boat I am getting about 11 but this is city driving.

I calculated my average milage over 25,000mi the other day for my 1998 12V 4X4 and got 17. 6mpg,about 70% of that is short, in town trips. In town driving only, average in the 16mpg range. Highway average around 19mpg running empty@ 70mph. Best milage ever was 21mpg on a trip to Wyoming.

I only have 1600 miles total and have averaged about 14 around town and just under 18 on a trip to Vegas. I'm a little dissapointed, but I expect as she breaks-in, she'll get better mileage. (These are with out cargo)
