5" sounds like @#$

I installed my 5" exhaust its to loud (booom). jon at citymuffler is sending me another muffler. he says this is going to quite it down. it seems that i lost hp with the 5". is this a common feeling on a stock truck with 5 inch? but i will be glad i did it when i get the juice on right? egts will not get above 1000 now

Yes, I lost Horse power also when I installed a 5" EX. the torque

seems the same,but not as peppy, I am going to change the

So why go to a 5"??? Not as peppy, Lost power, they have a terrible DROON, And way loud. I know you lost EGT's, but that happens with a 4", so what was the reason you wanted a 5"? Do you pull?

I believe 5" is only for those who make a lot of horsepower through mods etc... . 4" is plenty. Catcracker, looks like you'll have to throw some huge injectors and twin turbos on there... that should cure your 5" HP loss problem

does anyone make a 4"/5" exhaust that is 4" downpipe to muffler, and 5" back of muffler? i know kennedy diesel makes that for the duramax engines. it has all the plus's of a 4" exhaust, and the 5" tail pipe is just for looks... that is what i am interested in...

NO CRYBABIES If it is to loud... ... ... ... ... ... ... Your to old. Leave it stock!!!!! I run 5" with EZ of Bullydog and there is plenty of power. My wife said that this truck sounds almost as good as my 01 did... .

I'm strongly thinking of a flow thru muffler with the stock system... although a 5" from muffler back would be tough looking

I liked the sound of a 3" pipe straight through muffler sound on the 1st generation trucks. It had a tight throaty almost Harley sound to it. 4" has a more hollow sound. I've never heard a 5" system but I can only imagine it would sound even more hollow. My favorite around here is a 1st gen dually with 3" duals out the back. It sounds crispy, deep and throaty all at the same time. I don't know about EGT with it as I've never talked with him. Just see him around town looking as busy as I am.

It makes sense that you'll lose horsepower with a 5 inch exhaust. You no longer have an exhaust flow capacity properly matched to your engine airflow. Your pumping losses associated with the oversized exhaust cause a drop in horsepower (and I'd bet torque too!).



Remember, a certain amount of backpressure is beneficial. I would say that without a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, and a whole lot higher flow rate, anything bigger than 4 inch is going to hurt you. For those who have already invested in 5 inch exhaust, a more restrictive muffler might help. Otherwise you'll have to make up some flow restrictors and insert them in the piping.

backpressure is not desired at all post turbo on a turbo diesel engine. what is recomemded maximum on most TD engines is less than 1 psi backpressure [2"H2O is the limit = ±. 66 psi iirc]. high flow/ high velosity is what you are looking for. too big of a pipe, the flow slows down, too small of a pipe, you get really high velosity, but too much pressure. 4" is probably the perfect size for these engines, but 5" looks so mean sticking out back there...

Yes, without a muffler it is wicked loud. But the HP/TQ loss makes no sense to me. Show me on a dyno.

5" EX.

IN my guess on the loss of H/P on my rig is that now the larger

EX. is pulling to much heat away from the EX. side of the turbo.

and as you know hot gases are expanded more than cool ones

and less pressure on the (dam I can't think of the ex. turbine)side

so less boost, not a lot, but enough to notice!I will know more if I ever install my Flow master Muffler,And first a pyrometer. IMHO

you can have to much heat and not enough,ask the men who

run 2 and 3 turbo set ups about that they have more info about that than Me. GWD

I'm curious, what's wrong with being old? It just happens you know. . . if you're lucky. I can still remember when I thought everybody was an old fa*t, now I are one. I vote for fours. . . later on you'll figure out looks are only temporary. It's the great friendships that really make it worthwhile. Course when you get older. . . can't hear the dam droan anyway.

I just connected the straight 4" exhaust I had installed on my 2003 HO to a 5" vertical chrome stack (turnout). NO MORE DRONE!!!!!!!!!!! When the exhaust dumped under the truck, there was a drone. Now it's gone, and the exhaust sounds great!!!!!!! It now sounds like my '96 HO did after I straight piped it. I started with a 4" stainless down pipe from "Diesel Performance Parts", then added an extension and fabricated a special support bracket. I had already mounted a 5" vertical chrome stack (turnout) at the right front corner of the pickup bed. Then, using two 5" diameter 90 degree ells, about two feet of 5" stainless flex pipe and a 5" to 4" reducer, I connected and clamped every thing together. For those who don't like it too loud, a resonator would no doubt fill the bill for them. I don't feel any power loss either. If anything, it feels even stronger now. I love it when a plan comes together!!!!!Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.
