I have gone thru all of the searched items under 5th gear nut and learned a great deal.

I'm going to make a decision here in te next couple days. Its either the " standard fix" and hope to get 20K out of it, or the trans rebuild from Standard trans. with the splined shaft.

The question is,has anbody actually got the new shaft that is splined all the way and how long has it worked? Miles etc?

And has anybody bought the rebuilt 5 speed with the new shaft in it and how has it worked?

I called Standard trans in Forth Worth and they( Nice sounding gal named Michelle) said some "hot shotters" have bought them and have not been back yet.

Does that mean the hot shotters broke down and can't get back? or they are working good and no problems?

Don't mean to be repetitive, but just thought I'd ask, before spending $600 on a fix, or $2000+ on the trans. .

Last thing. Where can i get a photo of what the innner part of this transmission looks like? I have a picture in my mind of the half splined shaft etc, but would like to see it. .

Thanks. ed

Don't know about you, but I use my truck to make my living. As such I cannot afford downtime. If my 5th gear goes out, I'll probably just swap out the transmission for one of theirs.

Ed, I likely asked the same questions of Std. Trans. early AM last week. The counter guy I spoke with said they had only sold 50 or so of the new main shafts, and non had come back yet. He suggested I talk to the tech that does the bulk of the rebuild work, Stan, however I didn't call back.

As you've learned, this is a old, often beat subject around these parts, and untill DC does a recall (I'm not holding my breath), it'll be our special cross to bear.

Moparguy, I was hoping to hear from a couple guys on the board who actually bought the trans or shaft and can say, "yes" it worked no problems etc, or the trannie.

This is certainly a sour subject on the board, and like another guy said, I'll be going over hills in 4th from now on. . I will too, after this either $600 or $2000 bill. .

Love the truck, but damn these quirks they have...

I use my truck for a living also and have posted the fix that works, dig back thru and find it or e-mail me or call me. The little icons above the screen!!!!!! 700,000+

Please see my post in the current 5th gear thread on this forum. From watching the guys at Std. Trans. work, I can recommend their trans and their fully splined mainshaft.
