#53 block information

I just received a reply from an email sent to Cummins inquiring about the #53 block problem, so don't just check your block #, check your engine serial number. Let me know what you find. I am starting a log to track all the problems for possible legal action. I would like to get a group together and go after reimbursement of repair costs for all of us with the #53 block problem. We have a #53 block with a serial number before the production change in a 2001 Ram 3500 Dually which we took delivery on 4/00.

In 1997 Cummins had some cylinder block cracking issues with castings that were made using "pattern 53" at our foundry. The cracks occurred in a few very tough, high duty cycle, high

HP, applications, such as logging skidders, and other off-highway

construction equipment where there are very high load factors placed on the engine from duty cycle and actual twisting of the engine. In a few of these applications the block could crack in a horizontal line directly below the large cup plugs on the exhaust side, at the rear of the engine. The crack would allow coolant to leak from the block, so it was easy to detect, and there was no further engine damage. The good news, for you and the truck

you are considering purchasing, is that the cylinder block was strengthened in Dec 1998 and there have not been any similar failures since then. In addition to the strengthened block the Dodge application is a very light duty cycle (low HP) application that does not stress the block like happens with off-highway equipment.

The strengthened cylinder blocks went into full production with

engine serial number 56878917. So any engine with an ESN higher than that number has been built with a strengthened cylinder block that was molded using pattern number 54 or 56. With a Dodge Cummins truck you also get the benefit of an engine that has been designed for, and used in many, very

severe off-highway applications so it is "tested by fire" and our Dodge customers get the benefit of an overdesigned diesel engine. You can't make a mistake with a Dodge Cummins powered truck.

Hmmm. I've got a build date of October 21, 1998. And my serial number is 56515624 so I'm below the date and serial number where they started making the strengthened block.

But I do not have a 53 block. Nor do I have a 54 or 56. In fact there are no such numbers anywhere on my block that one could visually see. I've been up and down it with mirrors etc.

From what I've read here, my block is OK. Am I wrong or did I read mis-information? I'm not too worried but would somehow like to determine if the block I have is OK... and whether or not the serial number is the "tell all" when it comes to block quality.

triple whammy???

so i guess i really got a problem... build date of 9/98, ESN way before the listed one above (mine is 56541527) and a #53 block!!! so i guess i can just sit back and wait for mine to crack?? and what does he mean that it won't happen in a dodge application. i happen to know a guy who had his crack with 50 some thousand miles on it bone stock!!!!

sometimes i get frustrated by learning everyday some new issue our truck have... weak blocks, losing mainfold bolts, KDP, weak lift pumps, poor rear brakes, poor steering... what next???

   sorry just venting for a moment!!

LUCKMAR... are you basically saying Cummins claims they improved the block in 1998... . and your 2001 has an engine with the bad block? I wonder how a old S/N 53 block found its way in a 2001? Kinda reminds me of the KDP timing covers in later model 24V trucks. Something else Cummins says was completely fixed with the very first ISB 24V. Some here have found that is also not true.

I have #56805274, can the casting number be determined from the ESN? There are no other numbers like 53 or whatever that I have seen on other blocks?

OK. . now I'm confused... I cannot find the 53 casting number. . my engine SN is 5676659. . but has a build date of 8-28-00... Truck build date is 9/00. . its is a 2001. 5...

the engine casting number is under the powersteering pump??? Correct????

Can somebody clear up this build date. . and SN... .

Thanks

Bryan

53 BLOCK ANXIETY

I've got a 53 Block... ... Anyone care? DC? NOPE! Cummins? NOPE! When your outta warranty, your outta warranty! If your not outta warranty, don't worry. If your outta warranty, and if your worried sick about it, sell your truck & buy a non 53 truck.

When I first heard about this thing I was pi$$ed off and worried sick. Can any of us do anything about it? If you've got a 53, you've got a 53! Buck up! I'm not happy about it either but what am I gonna do about it? Worry? Why? If it's gonna go, it will. Nothing any of us can do about it.

I personally have more important things going on in my life than to let the 53 block eat at my nerves.

IMHO... . Don't worry about something that you have no control over and if it takes a dump on you... ... Worry about it when and if it happens.

#53

55... . I've got a 55 number, never heard anyone speak of a #55 block. My serial number is below the one posted (56878917) but I have an engine built date of 02 Feb 01 at B-series expansion site. I did purchase from cummins the customized parts catalog for my engine. Really comes in handy for parts numbers. Later

53 Block

NCOSTELLO... ...

Doomed? I sure hope not. Shortly after buying my truck I learned of the 53 Block, VP44 issues, LP issues & such. I knew the auto trans would be something I would have to do (DTT), but not as soon as I did.....

The "53 block issue" that one caught me off-guard. I just can't worry about something I have no control over & really can't afford. If it happens I'll deal with it but until then, no sense in worrying.

Heres my earlier post.

53 BLOCK!

**$t!!

Just found the casting number this AM... . Truck has 98k miles & so far, so good. Does anyone know how often there is actually a problem with this casting? Some of what I read on this board seems to get kinda blown out of proportion a bit.

Should I start shoppin around for a new truck due to this problem or is it 1 in a 1000 that actually cracks?

Just bought this truck 4 months ago & discovered the LP problems, VP44 problems, KDP problems, Weak 47RE, & now the 53 block problems... What next?

Don't get me wrong I love this truck (CTD) but what next?

Clay
