How Much Horsepower? Clutch Slipping

fuel pressure and the cp3

when I start out in the morning and make the 2-3 shift, it will grind but still somewhat easily slip into gear. After a few stop and go take offs and by the time the temp of the motor starts to register on the gauge everything in the trans gets lubed and it stops grinding. It just sarted doing this and I have already changed the syntorq once with the install of the fastcoolers and I only have about 12k miles on truck, (about 2 or 3k on syntorq change). Anyone have any insight on why it just started grinding?

If you have a 4x4 (your sig does not say) let her warm up in third gear for alittle while. What I mean by that is place the tc in nuetral and the six speed in third. That little bit and double clutch it till it gets warm. You could even drive until the grid heater turns off in third gear, just keep it under 20 mph.

Curious about those with this issue. Where does your clutch engage on the pedal. Near the floor, mid-way or at the top?

It would appear the factory hydraulics are less than desirable, and I'm sure the cold weather isn't helping.

Try to shift with pedal to the floor. Adjust your pedals up some, for those that have that option.

I noticed this started happening with my 6spd around 10K mile mark (I now have over 25K miles) I was becoming concerned about the grinding ... . in that you can feel it in the stick but not actually hear it per se... ...

Anyway to make a long story short..... one day by chance I was running late and in hurry and working the way through my neighborhood with several stop signs... . one stop I did the 2 to 3 shift (and experienced grinding)... the next stop sign I started in in 2nd (I usually do)..... rev'd it out to about 2K RPM and then shifted to 4th..... at the next stop was a red light to pull onto a main road and when I did the the 2nd to 3rd shift it was smooth as glass... . (the truck was still cold) and it continued to remain smooth for next serveral ~ 100 miles... ... SOOO every now and then I drive it like a stole it and that seems to fix the problem... ... . Just my 2 cents worth

HObrian, I have the electric T-case and myself and quite a few others I have talked to (even my tech at the dealer) couldnt get my t-case into N? I push the little button for nuetral and all it does is blink and nothing more. Does anyone know how to get the elec. t-case in N?

Fred, I just got a new SBC put in and it engages closer to the floor than the stocker, but its still very new and I can already tell a diffrence in the engagement now then when I picked it up, (its getting slightly further up) I will mess with the pedals tomarrow.

APersondek, Once I get a few stop and go starts then I guess the syncros get some lube on them and start doing their job, I will try to skip 3rd and see if it helps sling some lube around and helps the prob.

I have the 03', and the only time I can get it to grind, is if I do not push the clutch down ALL THE WAY! Other than that it shifts as smooth as butter, even in the cold temps. I have the Amsoil lube in it, and have had since it had 8,500 miles. Now has 38,000 Plus. I LOVE IT!!

"mine does this too... "

"I was in a hurry"

The proper way to address this problem is, "When I get in a hurry and forget that my transmision is cold and needs longer to make a shift, I occassionally grind the gears when shifting into 3rd" :-laf

I've done this myself a little bit the last few days. Start letting the clutch out before transmission is fully in gear. Slow down, let it warm up and everything's smooth as can be. I like the double clutching idea, do this myself every now and then. The NV5600 is really smoooooth if you take your time. This is my second 5600 and I wouldn't dream of calling either one of them "notchy" as some have. They're just a lot bigger than the trannys behind a 2. 2l Cavalier.

Never thought of the t-case in N idea. Might have to try that.

you have to use a pen (sharp point), and push the tiny little button next to the N on the switch on the dash, I've done it, works fine. Its covered in the owners manual

I have no problem shifting when cold, but if I am lazy (not being deliberate enough) during a shift especially going into 5th, I get some clash- not quite a grind but a few bumps felt in the shifter. This happens at any temperature. I have found that if you drive it like a truck and not light handed, it's happy.

BTW, I do a lot of gear skipping and it seems to like 2-4-5th or 6th depending on your criuse speed. I have just hit 6K mi. and am thinking about a fluid (trans/ rears) drain soon. I already have Amsoil 2000 for the rears, what do we like for the trannys?

Since reading this thread I've paid a little more attention to what I'm doing when I shift. When I'm taking my time and driving like a Gramma, which is quite often, I will put a little pressure on the shift lever but not enough to complete the shift. When the synchros are finished with their job and the transmission is ready to shift, the lever will fall into gear with no added pressure. Just a little push or pull on the lever is all you need. There is never any grinding or popping when I do this and it is extreemely smooth. I have no idea if this has any adverse effects on the synchros or anything else, but I don't see how it could. It's usually at least a full sec. maybe more, never tried to count. But it definently seems to take forever so I can understand why the 5600 seems too hard to shift when you're in a hurry.

Syntorque in a NV 5600?

I thought the NV 5600 didn't use Syntorque? The NV 4500 uses Syntorque but the NV 5600 uses manual transmission lube according to Dodge and Standard Transmission. Mattymak are you sure you bought Syntorque? Its about $20 a quart from Dodge. They should have sold you the bottles that say for the NV 3500 transmission, thats the manual transmission lube. The NV5600 is definently a different oil than the NV4500, at least according to part #'s. I don't know about syntorq, redline mtl, or anything else other than factory. I figured mine's still under warranty so I'll just bite the bullet and buy the stuff from DC.

I ran Mobile straight 50 weight synthetic transmission fluid for 30K in my '01 before I sold it. I couldn't tell any difference. Didn't shift any easier/harder in cold weather. I've since found out that it's not rated for synchromesh transmissions. Anybody need about 3. 5 gals. , I'll make ya a deal. :-laf

You're using the wrong lubricant in your 6 speed

The only thing is, is that syntorq is what comes in these things from the factory.

Thats what I thought. mattymac, the NV 5600 uses manual transmission lubricant (Mopar part number 4874464) NOT Syntorque(part number 4874459) Oo. .

Double clutching the first time you shift into third in the morning will totally prevent the grind. You only have to do it the one time as the fluid seems to thin out as soon as it gets going.

My truck grinds 3rd and 4th EVERYTIME. . unless i double clutch. i just replaced the transmission lube with Redline MTL and it almost made it worse. . It is hard to shift into every gear but only grinds 3rd and 4th. . even when the transmission gets warm it will still grind 4th many times
