getting the correct weight registration is so important. a local plumbing contractor's accounts payable paid the empty weight registration for a F650. while towing a backhoe his driver went throught the scales. A $6,000 fine. His bookkeeper went to court and got it reduced to a few hundred.
another heads-up, my dealer registered my 5500 when i purchased it for the empty weight of the truck. i drove it for a year until i had to pay '09 registration before i realized what had happened, fortunately i did not get pulled over. be sure of the weight rating you want before your office or wife sends in the money to the DMV.
I hate to say it, but i sure would like to see consistent DOT regs from state to state. i just made a round trip to NM from CA and in each state they had different computations and requirements. I have a US DOT # and a CA #. It is a pain not knowing what to expect.
On another note, because of the economy many of the weigh stations have been shut down in all three states that I went through AZ, CA and NM.
