99dodge 6sp 275 injectors, boost elbow , edge chip, rebuilt 6sp 2years ago,... 5th gear syncro clunked out and grinds bad when try to use 5th gear. Need a place to get it fixed between Yuma AZ and San Diego. I live in San Felipe MX. Can drive without to much trouble. 240,000 miles on truck. :):) Thanks

You'll have to be more specific about what you want in order to receive good advice. You could have lots of shops "repair" it or even "rebuild" it but how good are they? You could possibly buy a reman from a Dodge dealer. You might be able to find a salvage yard takeout but I"d guess chances are slim.

My advice is take the truck to a shop who will pull the transmission and strap it to a pallet and ship it to Standard Transmission in Fort Worth, TX or Blumenthals in OKC. Both of these companies are the premier rebuilders for NV-5600 and other manual transmissions. Both are TDR advertisers and are well known to TDR members. Standard rebuilt an NV-5600 for me several years ago. I enthusiastically recommend them.

Have it professionally rebuilt, have the shop install a new clutch assembly and related parts, reinstall the tranmission, and you'll have a reliable and long lasting rebuilt transmission.

It is a complex transmission and parts are hard to find. The transmission weighs approximately 360 lbs. so it is not a job for an amateur.

X2 what Hbarlow said. If you only got 2 yrs out of a rebuild, It would be a good idea to take it to Standard Transmission or Blumenthals and have it done right.

Good luck.

Who rebuilt it last time? Typically what happens is the endplay in the mainshaft get's a little loose with wear and it's able to walk slightly to the side causing a bind at the thrust bearing which is inside the 5th gear syncro. This will cause the syncro to brake, and no longer function. If it did this, in a period of two years, I'd say it was probably shimmed a bit loose when it was rebuilt.

get it fixed

I want to get the truck fixed and not pay another 4,500 hundred dollars for two years use ----the truck is only worth about that much. :):)

Depending on what you find in there when you open it up, you might be able to get by just replacing the syncro but you'll likely have to replace that pocket thrust bearing as well. A full rebuild is likely not needed. You just need to find somebody close who is willing to do only what you want.

Standard Transmission will disassemble, surgically clean, and carefully examine every component in your transmission for wear or damage. They will replace ONLY those parts that require replacement.

I think I paid about $2100 for a NV-5600 rebuild on a 300+k mile transmission with new clutch assembly and all labor to R&R back in late '05 or early '06.

A TDR member posted recently that he had paid about the same price for his rebuild.

If you paid $4500 for a rebuild that lasted two years you selected a bad shop for the work.

Its your truck, your money, and your choice. I've given you my recommendation.

I'm extremely happy with Standard Transmission's work on my NV5600. They only charge around $350 bench fee to disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble the trans. Other charges are dependent on what your trans needs to make it right.
