Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5TH Gear??

Ok 5th gear went out on my 97, i took the back cover off and am not really sure what i am looking at. Is the big gear set 5th gear or reverse? I am sure that the nut is on there because it wasnt laying in the bottom of the rear cover. I am at school and i dont have my manual with me so i am kinda in the dark on this deal. Any help or pics would be great. Thanks.

I took our cover off and took these pictures. We swapped for rebuilt. First shows in position, but nut backed off, next shows gear backed off for 4 speed NV4500 variant.

The gear will not be in the bottom of the case it will be on the shaft with the nut behind it if it came loose.

If the 5th gear nut did not come loose and you did lose 5th check the inside splines on your O/D clutch gear I had that happen twice

Earlier today I lost fifth gear and then lost all gears a few miles later, do you guys have any ideas on this one?

Clutch slipping? Did you lose it suddenly, then the others 1 at a time? Or all at once?

No clutch slip, at least not at first. I lost fifth, I tried to go to 5th a few times and ended up in 4th going another 3-4 miles to the next exit where I was going to get off and go the back route, when I went to down shift I had nothing. The transmission seem to go into every gear but just doesn't do anything, I even tried 4wd on the transfer case. The fact that I lost 5th and then lost everything else tells me it's not the clutch and not the transfer case but I had never heard of a similar circumstance so I wanted to see if anyone knows how bad it is.



It's a no go for the weekend, I am working and I have no vacation time left.

I don't think it's the input shaft, I have the 1 3/8's shaft and not enough power to break it, plus I lost fifth gear and then everything else so I think it's completely inside the transmission. I'll get it apart in the next couple weeks but I think I'll be without it for a while now. When it goes back together it'll have the quad 4x4 upgraded stuff. $$

So can you pull the back cover off of a 2wd with the transmission still in the truck or do you have to have it up on its end?

1000 miles ago I lost 5th gear too. After getting it fixed it now jumps out of 1st every time I lift my foot off the fuel pedal
