Starting a thread for my 2018 2500 4th Gen 6.4L Gas Engine Oil Sample Reports.

I went by the info on the cap for the initial report. This was the factory fill oil.

6300miles.

Going to shoot for the high side and do it at 15k (9k interval) miles since the TBN looked good.

I'm running Castrol Edge 0w40 on this next round.

For unit ID you will see 16 2500, its truck #16 of my work fleet.

I'm tracking Ram gasser oil info because we have 2019 Ram 1500 4x4 Larramie Longhorn 5.7L Hemi. I consider the 6.4L and 5.7L would be similar. I have 5 years dealer oil changes at the dealer and am considering having them go with 5W30 or 5W40, since we're in San Antonio TX.

What part of country are you, for comparison?

Thanks, Ron

I take it you haven't had the dreaded Hemi tick yet?

I've owned several 5.7's and two 5.4's and none have ever had the "tick". My insurance agent owns two, one in an AWD 300 and the other in his 1500. The 1500 has a very noticeable rattle. It's just broke through 60k miles and when he took it in for service, the dealership said "it's normal and don't expect us to find anything".

Don, what oil and weight are you running? I spoke with dealer service writer I've worked with for 18 years today and asked if he was aware of any oil related problems or failures on 5.7L Hemis and were there any optional weight oils I could use in mine for the 5 yrs of oil changes. He said no issues or failures he was aware of and 5W20 semi synthetic was the only recommended factory fill. He said he would be happy to add whatever I specified. I'm still studying this as my 2014 Jeep 3.6L runs Mobile 1 5W20 and performs well. although not a Hemi.

Like to hear all the info and make an informed decision.

Thanks all for talking about 5.7L Hemi on a 6.4L Hemi oil thread.

Cheers, Ron

Been to New Jersey a few times, mostly through McGuire AFB. Has some interesting dialogue issues with NJ dock workers. Funny now, not so much then.o_O:rolleyes:

This becomes funnier when I tell you I'm from the South and hear slower than I speak.

Nope.

I'm very familar with the direct injection tick, but its pretty quiet for now. Guy in our shop has a Mustang that is really bad with that typewriter tick.
Hemi tick is lifter noise. Some just make noise. But some don't fare so well:

The chocolate smell, not really wide spread away from the plant.

My dad worked there years ago for a small bit, it's not a bad place to work, supports a lot of families for sure. They do give back to the community as well in volunteer hours and lots of small programs.

Actually a pretty small plant, its a very nice part of NJ, very rural lots of farms still out this way.

Only a few years ago did they even start to publicize the fact and put up some marketing stuff and fix up the front.

I've been out to the Just Born plant in CA with the Jelly Belly stuff and they had bus load after bus load of humans a huge plany tour and gift shop, M&M not so much.

I am a member of another forum, which is more gasser oriented, and there are way too many of these showing up.

Which forum, will check it out.

I really got the gasser b/c, I wont be towing anything with it very often, figured the local miles would be hard on the emmissions stuff. Most days I wont even get over 50mph driving to work 20miles each way.

I will keep an eye on it, I have the max care version good as it gets since I really planned to keep this for a long time if it holds together.

0w40 is what is listed, I will check again on that in my manual. I read up on the Castrol Edge and its rated pretty well, I pulled the charts and the sort, it will be certified to the latest rev of API here shortly. They are just finishing up the application from what I found, will reach out to their tech support to comfirm what I'm using is good to go.

The Blackstone folks would have said something about failures and to reduce interval. O/A is really overkill for this thing, but I figure it would be fun to have the data and share.

If there is a gasser forum Im all for it.

I jumped on to GM-Trucks.com for my 6.2L suburban, also just joined mopar1973man. It all good info, I try to stay informed.

On my GM 6.2L they have a catch can modification that help with the PVC system to help balance the pressure and prevent blow by of oil back into the upper intake, my 180k mi. 2010 5.3L Tahoe was using 4qt every 5k. It didnt smoke or leak it was going some where, I always did the upper end cleaner at the dealer maybe every 20k. Found out about that catch can thing after I got rid of it, on that GM forum, best $25 I spent in a while.

I've run 5-20 in the 5.7's and 0w40 in the 6.4's. I live in interior Alaska and the trucks see up to mid 80's in the summer and -40 in the winter.

My .02 cents is the same failure mode happening with Ford 5.4's, extended drain interval. Engines that get the oil changed more often don't seem to have the failures. Also, MDS engines (like GM's smallblocks) should have lifters replaced every 125k -150k in my opinion. Once the rollers get chewed up, it's cam time baby!
