My first Dodge Ram was an HO 6 speed, and a great truck. When I decided to buy a new one in early '06 the dual mass flywheel and poor choice of gear ratios in the early G-56 convinced me I didn't want one. For private use towing your own trailer the G-56 is probably fine but for commercial hauling like in the transport industry I've heard of several owners who've put lots of miles on their G-56 trucks like I have routinely replacing flywheel assemblies and clutches. I heard of one who replaced his twice with OEM equipment and when the third failed at around 230k miles he replaced the entire flywheel and clutch with a South Bend conventional flywheel and clutch.

I expect to be happy with the Aisin 6 speed automatic. EB, a fellow TDR member and oil field hotshotter, has over 100k on his already pulling heavy everyday.

Since when have they ever made existing vehicles conform to new standards? They will never make you fit a DPF to a 5. 9.

The simple answer to the automatic trans problem is to buy a manual;) After 4 trucks with the 48re, I LOVE my G56 manual, what was I think all those years?

I thought they were clamping down on emissions so it might be something to think about. Just a thought.

I have 3600 miles on my new QG 4X4 dually with a 6 speed auto and 4:10's and I have never drove it without my Lance on it but it's lookin good so far, I think there is a big dif between the 07. 5's and the 08's following all the posts on here.

Talk to all the farmers and ranchers in califorina whom are about to be forced to phase out their older diesel equipment. I've been reading article after article on this. If it won't pass its got to go.

My wifes 07. 5 mega cab was flashed Jan 3, 2008 with all the latest flashes, recalls etc. We took delivery on the 4th. So far it has been perfect. I like hers better than mine. Its quicker, shifts better and gets the same fuel mileage. Witch is about 14. 5 unloaded, mixed driving. I've only ran 2 tanks of fuel thru the new truck so it should get better with time. Still got my fingers crossed but so far I can say nothing negative about the 6. 7

I received a post card from the California Air Resources Board. It is something they're considering, at least for our state.

I can't see them forcing everyone who drives a diesel to install a DPF. If that's the case, I'm taking residency in another state...

2Bear,

I am whole heartedly impressed with my 2008, 2500 with the 6. 7 and the auto trans. This thing can either pull like a freight train or be as doclie as you could ever want it to be. I suppose it would have the latest and greatest software in it so maybe that's why there are so many 08 owners with big grins on their faces, myself included. I give it a 9+ out of ten. I'm still getting used to not driving my 93 or it would probably be a ten...

From what I've been reading all the farmers and ranchers etc will have to upgrade to 08 year model equipment by 2010. Not retrofit the older stuff. I'll have to reread some of the articles to get my facts and figures straight, but at the very least it's something to look at.

I looked at the CARB site. They are talking about retrofits on older diesels but I couldn't find specifics. I read enough to be happy I don't live in California. Sounds like they are still in the planning public input stages.

I spoke to a friend of ours today and asked how his truck was doing. I knew his 6. 7 had been to the shop many times. He told me his truck was doing great. I thought great they finally fixed it. The rest of the story is that Chrysler bought his '07 back and found him a new truck with a 5. 9, so there are a few clunkers out there. I'm just happy that Chrysler made good, finally. I know he spent many hours in the shop. He is self employed and this was definitely cutting into his work time. Hope these stories are far and few between.

After all of the above replys - I'm getting a bit more comfortable with the thought of buying an 08 model.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I like the specs on the 4500 but haven't driven one yet.

I did drive a 3500 / 68RFE ... ... that shift paddle was sure nice - tooooo bad the Asien doesn't have it.

Tooo bad they don't offer the CC with the MegaCab too - wut the heck are they thinkin' about ?

Think I'll eventually drive over to Carson Dodge in Nevada and drive a 4500 up & down spooner summit - that should be a good workout. Want to see if I can live with that transmission shift.

Anybody driven the new Tundra with the console shift 6 speed ? - ... WOW !

Too bad it ain't a big ole diesel.

Thanks again for all the response.

Ray
