My first Dodge Ram was an HO 6 speed, and a great truck. When I decided to buy a new one in early '06 the dual mass flywheel and poor choice of gear ratios in the early G-56 convinced me I didn't want one. For private use towing your own trailer the G-56 is probably fine but for commercial hauling like in the transport industry I've heard of several owners who've put lots of miles on their G-56 trucks like I have routinely replacing flywheel assemblies and clutches. I heard of one who replaced his twice with OEM equipment and when the third failed at around 230k miles he replaced the entire flywheel and clutch with a South Bend conventional flywheel and clutch.
I expect to be happy with the Aisin 6 speed automatic. EB, a fellow TDR member and oil field hotshotter, has over 100k on his already pulling heavy everyday.
