I’ve recently added some shelving in my garage and with the current time delays in sourcing even some of the simplest maintenance items, I’ve decided to keep on hand three DBL7349 oil filters, three complete sets of 2013 through 2018 style Cummins, MoPar, or Parker-RACOR fuel filters, three gallons of Delo 400 XSP 5W40 synthetic, twelve quarts of Mobil 3309, two quarts of Dexron VI for the transfer case, an AISIN AS69RC transmission filter, a Fleetguard CCV filter, and at least one MoPar air filter. I buy gear oil in five gallon pails in GL5 and 75W90 weight.

Just this week, I received my trusty Amazon order, and noticed something different regarding the air filter. It’s been replaced with a brand new design, and the part number has changed from 53034051AB to 68517554AA.

Since pictures speak volumes, I’ve included a few. I’m kinda undecided as to whether I like this new design over the previous design. Doesn’t seem as robust IMO.

Greg,
You think it could be a better material? It should be made to the same or better specs. With the high airflow these engines have, be hard to believe they could go cheap on it.

I would use it... I buy my filters ahead, three of air, 3 fuel, 6 oil filters, 6 gallons of oil, 12 qts transmission fluid, case of xfer case fluid, and 16 qts gear oil.

Let us know what you figure out about the air filters.

Cheers, Ron

More Chinese made crap sneaking into our trucks? Just wondering. They are probably fine. But usually if it LOOKS cheap, it IS cheap.

I always buy my air filters from Geno's Garage, but I purchase the Cummins brand of air filters as this tends to be a couple of bucks cheaper. But I usually buy my oil filters and fuel filters in the same order to spread shipping cost over everything. I also buy them when Geno's has their filter sale once a year which I believe is 10% off. When I purchased the filter last, I paid around $24.00 for the filter. I now see that the Cummins air filter is selling around $28.25 so, with the filter sale price this should be around $25.00.

Greg,
Is it possible it is as good or better? Stelantis could face a lot of liability issues if it were. Are the pletes more flexible or less rigid than the previous version? Were they packaged fro Mopar in a box as well as the wrapper. Just curious if the glue is to help keep shape during shipping or if it has functional use as well.

I'm Googling to see any info on the new version.

EDIT: Its on Genos too... Well boys, looks like it's the filter now.

Thanks for the info, Ron

The glue keeps the pleats apart during periods of high vacuum. Some of the 5.9 filters did this too.

I’d guess it’s a higher flow version for the new HO requirements, similar to how the CR 5.9 filter went from 2” to 4”.

That won’t help us LO (Low Output) guys with Cab & Chassis trucks :D

So I ordered a pair of the old filters and the new ones came in. Not sure I’ll keep them, thou I still can’t imagine the new being worse that the old…. But they don’t look or feel as good, but I also know there is a lot more to filter media than appearance.

MoPar or Fleetguard? I’m curious if the Fleetguard piece has switched over.....or if it will switch over.

I have historically ran my air filters the full 30k allowed, but I also would remove them at 15k miles or thereabouts, when doing an oil change, and remove any debris from the pleats. The glue deal will certainly hinder that in the future, as I always used a short air nozzle and removed any remaining debris at an angle.

It'll be interesting to follow this thread and see if someone gets a Fleetguard filter. I have three of the old style on my shelf, so at 30K mile change intervals, I may never have to buy another air filter for the 5500.

Cheers, Ron

Fleetgaurd air filters have been on back order thru Genos for at least 2 months now. Initially they were accepting orders, now they have suspended all orders.

It could be, but it could also be due to supply issues. At one time early on in the pandemic Fleetguard had halted certain operations and used their air filter media to make air purifying respirator cartridges and N95 masks. Between that and the crazy backlash virtually every industry is facing it is very possible they are simply backlogged and taking care of their contracts (Mopar) ahead of everyone else.

I'm surprised you don't change on hours vs miles considering your usage.

I just looked at Napa for the heck of it. They show the yellow one as standard and the white one as Flame Retardant....
