Oil Analysis Comparison

Howdy

I am new to the Diesel World, New Dodge 2009 3500. I have a question about oil change intervals. I have changed the oil and filter twice. Both times the "Change Oil" message came on at approximately 2400 miles. I drive 17 miles to work and two to four short trips during the day. All I can find says the Oil change is determined by the duty cycle. Is my short, 2400 miles, interval due to my driving ??? Any thoughts appreciated.

Make a habit of taking the truck out once a week for a 1/2 hour highway cruise to allow a regen cycle.

Serious Driveshaft problem

My truck is a 2007 2500HD with the mega cab. I like the truck very much and no problems with the 6. 7 with 11. 5k.

I am writing the following only to give other owners a heads up on a problem that could have been a disaster for me and my wife. We were going to the North Ga mountains pulling our 35 ft fifth wheel. We had been running around 65MPH from Atlanta to the RV park. As we were turning into the park I heard a loud thrump thump. I was moving very slowly to clear the roadway. I told my wife this does not sound good. I looked under the truck and saw that the center bearing that holds the drive shaft in place had come loose from the mount. I made it to our parking site by driving very slow with the shaft flopping around as I had the road blocked.

Now the reason for this post is the shaft torn a hole in the heat shield on the fuel tank and make some marks on the fuel tank. If this had happened while we were running 65MPH we could have had the fuel tank torn open and a very large fire when fuel hit the very hot exhaust. The dealer had no real comment, not even a I am sorry.

I still like my truck and I want only to advise everyone to check this bearing anytime they service the truck. If this is the wrong place to post, I am sorry.

Thanks

I bought my 2008 Quad Cab 2500 20 Dec. I have a little over 20,000mi so far with no problems at all. I get 18-20 solo running 70mph +/- and 12-14 pulling a 35' camping trailer weighing in around 9,000lbs. The truck runs great, pulls great, and the exhaust brake works like a charm.

Steve,

I also am new and can't seem to find the list of threads or the default or the beginning. Can you provide a little more instruction? I would appreciate it.

Dan

You can get to the list of forums by clicking on "Discussion Forums" in the menu bar at the very top of any page on the website. Then click on the forum you wish to view. That will give you the list of threads in that forum (you were probably at the list of threads in the 6. 7l forum when you found this thread). Once on that list if you scroll down just past the list of threads you'll see a box that says "Display Options" and in that box you'll see three drop down boxes right next to one another - the 3rd box will say something like "Last 10 days" - if you click on that box you'll see all the different options "Beginning" being one of them. Select that and then click on the "Show threads" button right below it and you'll get a list of all of the threads back to the start of that forum (note there will be multiple pages).

Here is one for all the techs. I own a 2007. 5, 2500, SLT. 4x4, automatic, quad cab, HD with exhaust brake, tow package and I tow/haul about 10 or 11k from CT to NV round trip for the last two yrs since I retired. I get a totally random noise that I cannot pin down. It has not had any negative effect that I can tell and it comes from the passenger side. I am no mechanic but I do know that it can be electrical, usually intermittent or mechanical, usually more consistent but this noise is totally random in every way. This is my first truck and diesel but I did work on construction after getting out of the army and drove diesels and towed but back in the late 60's it was very different.

Anyone else experience this noise??

I have an 08 2500 slt 4x4 I had a system warning come on saying perform service after looking in the owners manual it says i need to replace the ccv filter element clean the egr cooler and egr valve i looked further to see how to service these items but there is nothing in the book is this something I can do or does it need to be done by the dealer

I'm new to the Dodge Cummins family I have a 08 Mega cab bought with only 30,098 miles on it a few weeks ago. I was wondering what are a few things that many of you are doing to help your trucks perform better. I just recently got a MP-8 and BADP exhaust. I thought that would be a good place to start. What are the warranties on these vehicles, isn't there a 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper and a 100,000 on motor and drivetrain? The exhaust starts at the turbo and dpf with the bungs. Is this a good start? I wonder if there is anyone local that can help me with installation. I'll check in Kentucky and see.

Has anyone come up with any ideas on improving the gas mileage on a 2008 dodge 3500, 4x4, 6. 7 with 6 speed automatic?

If you're using gas, that might be your problem. Try #2 diesel.

Other than that try to always drive downhill with the wind at your back.

02,

I have about tried it all and I think the best bet is to install a Smarty. All the other stuff will help the performance just a little and add it all up you still have just a little. The other issue is anytime you drive over 55-58 your mileage does suffer. With EPA testing around the corner I think the DPF/Cat removal will help a little but keep all your parts. You can disable your EGR and all associated gizmos but I don't recommend there removal because you will just have to reinstall them.

And 02 don't mind some on the forum, they are jerks. You can get some worth while info but you have to sort thru.

Unplug your EGR. You will gain a little more mileage along w/ less sooting and regens. It's a free mod, and if you don't like it you can plug it back in.

The connection at the EGR acuator motor (if your looking at your intake manifold, top right side of the EGR there is a brown connection).

The only thing it will do is throw CEL on the cluster (P0405 is what's tripped). If you plug it in and after 5 cold start cycles. The light will go out, but will store a soft code if the dealer tech plugs in. The tech may think the EGR needs replacement.

It's just another alternative for a guy who seeking a little better mileage, less regens/sooting w/o doing full deletes. Personaly my truck stock wise was doing fine, but was curious w/ unplugging the EGR and results was good. It's not for everyone that is worried about warranty or such.

I know the 07. 5 and 08's needed a later flash (or J-35 the latest) for the Butterfly valve flapper (in the intake manifold) command to stay open by default when unplugged.

Your Smarty S-67 basically is doing the samething w/ commanding the EGR at 0% w/o a CEL light tripping.

Editor Robert Patton reported in the recent TDR article that deleting all the emissions control on an ISB6. 7 does not increase fuel mileage a measurable amount.

Harvey, I disagree with Roberts conclusion. I do agree that you will not see a 5 mpg improvement tho. An we are both using just one truck each to compare our results.

I have three + years worth of data and still counting of fuel mileage. I keep track of every gallon of diesel fuel my truck uses plus cost of the fuel. I start a new excel spread sheet every Nov 1, this is when I put my truck into service in Nov 2007. The first year of used combine highway/city and trailer towing averaged 11. 59 MPG. The last full year (12 months) same approximate miles driven was, 14. 17 MPG. That is 2. 58 MPG improvement and also I now change my oil every 5K instead of 3K. So yes it is worth using a Smarty S-67ME.

Jim & HB,

I read the report also and thought there was a lot of research put into the report. I did disagree with the statement that regens would only burn 1 + gallons of fuel in 1000 miles of driving.

Several years of data should be a good indicator but did usage split between highway and city miles remain exactly the same . . . and towing/not towing?
