There was a fifth gear nut repair that could be done without pulling the transmission if caught in time. ANYHOW the G56 is from Damilers commerical divison.

Glad to hear your 4500 has done you well in your truck JEFF. We have had a 95, 96,2 97's and a 99. All trucks have had at least 2 transmissions replaced. Most were within the warranty period. The 5600 just has heavier guts and works better for us. Since I work for a trailer company we hear from our customers, the good and bad of every truck. Fords are the most popular hear in Denver, but the trouble with the 6. 0 has made all the ford guys uneasy, just as the g56 and AAM axles make me worry about the Dodge. The boss has the dealerships trying to hunt down a 5600, hope we do find one. I also hope that the g56 gives everyone a great service life, or out does the 5600. right now they are just too new for us to gamble with and have a load that is broke down on the side of the road. After all thats why we run Dodge/Cummins.

six speed

I just bought a new 05 3500 qc srw ctd with a six speed ( nv5600) , all the ones up to now at least have the $400 added , all diesels require the hd transm the reg, is for the gas motors,, there are still some six speeds on lots in this area depending on whether you are looking for an st or slt package, or a 2500 or 3500, I had an 03 6 sp. ( 4500) and it worked fine and shifted great ,no problems ,,looking forward to long service out of this truck,, I live in the northern virginia area

Who is Blumenthal HD?? No one and I mean no one has posted a G56 failure on two Dodge Diesel web sites or on any general diesel web site I have visted yet. Is Blumenthal HD a Dodge/D. C. dealer?

Blumenthal Heavy Duty

DPKetchum relax. :-{} Check your TDRs Blumenthal is an advertiser in the TDR and they sell many drive train components for both small and large trucks. Its only a matter of time to the first failure. If South Bend Clutch is right (and Peter usually is) clutch failures will be first. There is a post on the TDR although I couldn't find it again about an input shaft failure on a G56. I will post the thread as soon as I find it again for you. Ken Irwin

PS My bad, he wants to put in a G56 because his NV 5600 has a bad input shaft. My appoligies MR Ketchum. But it IS only a matter of time. :-laf

PSS Check out KBalzuweit's post over on the Towing forum under "Which Ram to Buy", He says that the G56 is not holding up for hotshotters. Maybe He can post specifics about failures that he is aware of. Ken

Check out your issue 47 TDR, page 19. Heck no, D/C would never admit a problem. They still claim to know nothing about 5th gear in the NV4500's.

We don't have a G56 problem

LEPage your killing me. :D :D The G56s weren't on hold for a couple of weeks due to excessive failures in the first 100 miles. :D :D "Those ball joints in the Durangos are not defective and theres no problem with the 3rd gen ball joints or universals either!!!"  Don't you know that all ball joints fail in about 30K miles!! Oo.

Here is the problem

You will see longer life providing you grease them! Metal to metal causes wear. This is the reason the factory joints don't last. I picture it this way, some woman in China is given a small bottle of grease and an acid brush when she comes to work each morning at 6 AM. Her job is to apply grease to the ball joints and universal joints as they come down the assembly line. She works dutifully until her first break. While she is on break, 25 ball joints and 50 universal joints go by without grease Oo. She comes back but left the bottle of grease in the break room  15 more joints go by as she goes back and retrieves the bottle. They shut down the assembly line at lunch but she's late coming back from lunch and 37 joints go by without grease.  Due to just in time delivery her bottle runs out of grease at 2:45 and the rest of the joints on her shift don't get any grease. Oo. Oo. Oo.

PS she's working 12 hours days! :D :D

And I stand by this post!! Ken Irwin

Not trying to claim I know anything about it or upset anyone, just telling you what these transmission folks told me. If you want to find out more, give them a call. They seemed to be really knowledgable when I spoke to them on Friday. Damn, anything you post on here anymore, someone wants to get all upset & defensive. Calm down guys, we're all in this expensive hobby together!

Not upset its just thats its a new unit to Dodge and I can't imangine any one of them being past the warranty period and a aftermarket trans company telling someone about ALL the failures and so far I at least have not seen one post about anything failing on one other then then ones that were on hold. Its how rumors get started. I read on the Ford sites about ALL the 48re's failing also. Ford owns Cummins also and just thinks the 6. 0 is a better engine.

So far the only people to report any failure of a G-56, are people that don’t have one. Eventually they are going to fail, as ALL the other transmissions have.

The clutch also will fail, given enough horsepower and a heavy enough load. I expect to have my clutch to fail, as I would any clutch to fail with the level of horsepower that I will eventually get to.

There are a lot of people that just don’t like change. When the ’94 came out, a lot of people, including me, said “ that truck is butt ugly and you’ll never see one in my driveway”. Well, I really liked my ’97. The only reason I bought the ’05 was, it has a higher GCVWR, better brakes, more hp, more doors, ect.

The Getrag’s, the NV4500’s, the NV5600’s have failed and are going to continue to fail.

The G-56 will also fall into the same pattern. Some from the lack of maintenance, some from abuse and some from defective parts. The point is, NO component, electrical or mechanical, as a group, is 100% reliable.

I would rather drive my Dodge with any component they choose to put in the Dodge, than have a truck, as the Ford owners themselves say, “it’s a roll of the dice as to weather you get a good one or not”.

If you had an '03 with a 6 speed, then it was a 5600, not a 4500 as they are 5 speeds. If you have an '05 with a 6 speed, it could be early enough to have the 5600 (you'd be lucky and better off IMHO). Is your reverse to the left of first gear, or to the right of fifth gear?

If bluemnethals said they were having problems I would believe them. Our 97 kept eating 4500s, and blumenthals installed an 5600. I have had no problems with this new transmission in over 120k ( did replace a clutch, but thats nothing to do with the transmission ). We tow large heavy loads of new flatbed trailers, and it still does it's job. From my experience I can say bluementhals is top notch and reliable.

What have I got???

I have a 2005 Quad Cab 4X4 2500 delivered in late March this year, ordered in Jan. Hold up was the 6 speed transmission I was told.

It is a 6. 0 HO Cummins engine.

The transmission is a aluminum case 6 speed, Data off the transmission listed as MAGAL P/N 032462, NR/ZGS Brazil. Shifts good so far, 4,200 miles on the truck with a 750 mile tow last week, 8,000 trailer. A little noisy at idle in neutral, probably clutch, or input shaft noise??

So is this a G56?

I would like to change the transmission oil and need to know what to use?

Has a 14 MM drain plug and fill plug.

Yes, it does have 3:73 rear gear.

I guess the G56 is a Daimler/Chrylser product made in Brazil.

Dodge folks tell me it uses ATF4+ fluid. Thanks for your help.
