Looks like this board was opened just in time for me! Seriously, I need some help...

I was on the way home from work, running about 65 and the truck made a clunking sound (almost like a muffled backfire, but could feel it in the floorboard). I lost power for a second and then everything was fine again. Stopped at the next gas station and emptied the water seperator. Thought maybe I had some water in the fuel. Started back down the road and noticed that occationally rattle sound when I had my foot into it. It also seemed to be more difficult to put into gear (from a stop). Then I noticed when I put it into 1st gear it would pop out of gear when I let off the go pedal. It doesn't come out of gear while you are accelerating, only when you let off.

I am bummed!

Sounds like pilot bearing, or input shaft bearing issues.

Has anybody else seen this?

BTW, I have 57K on it now.

Thanks in advance,

WOT

I had a 97 that would occasionaly pop out of 5th only on deceleration never while accelerating. It was a good 25k or so out of warrenty. A new transmission was put in after they did the 5th gear nut replacement which did not fix the poping out of gear.

Good luck with what is causing yours. Mine never made any noise.

Have you checked the fluid level? It's too late to save it now but it may help in the diagnosis.

I don't think it would be the clutch as it only affects first gear. It is probably an internal trany part.

It could be:

Shift fork (liner pad or broken fork)

Split or cracked synchro

Cracked sliding collar

1st gear bushing or bearing bad (it would be turning the fastest at highway speed)

It will have to come out and get fixed, the more you drive it, the more $ to fix.

Good Luck.

Uhhh... The purpose of Truck 911 is for members that have a truck that has broken down and is sitting dead on the side of the road and needs someone local to come and help bail them out.

That was the intent Mike I was thinking of folks on the road or stuck in the driveway before they would be forced to having to go to the steeler. this was not for our NORMAL repair but for Emergent Need only. Thanks Geoff in Everett

I'm moving this over to the 24v drivetrain forum. The purpose for this forum is for those members that are stuck on the side of the road or have a truck that is down and out of commission, not for more "regular" problems.

Have an update for everyone...

Just got back from the dealer - had them show me the pieces of my

transmission. Looks like an intermediate shaft bearing went bad - one bearing in the assembly lost a chunk of metal. It appears that that chunk found its way to the rear main shaft bearing. Once it did it locked up the bearing and spun the race in the housing (must have been when I felt the truck bog down for a second). Chrysler wants to see the transmission since they claim they haven't had any issues with 6-speeds before (yah, I believe that  ). Anyway, the new transmission is being delivered Tuesday.

I am so happy that I have an extended warrantee - I bet a new transmission costs some MAJOR bucks.

Just a follow up... Got the new transmission. It's MUCH better than the original one was - shift much more easily. Also had them replace the clutch while they had it apart on their dime. Got a South Bend MU0090 CON O clutch kit. It's a much easier clutch than stock, Although it makes a little noise (SouthBend tells me it will get better as the clutch loosens).
