Is anybody still having the 2nd - 3rd shift problems w/ the 6 Speed Trans?

I have slight "gear clash" on low rpm shift from 2nd to 3rd (like w/ a cold engine, keeping rpms down until it warms up) and was wondering if anyone has / had this same problem and what they've done about it. Talked w/ dealer, but am a bit reluctant to have them try and figure out the problem...

Thanks.

T Smith

Mine used to do the slight low RPM clash til about 6500mi. I now have over 12,000 miles and no clashing or any problems what so ever. I don't baby it. The power is uprated,I race it,I clutchless shift it and I'm slamming the gears when I'm off- roading... doing fine so far. The 6spd is still generally pretty new,so well see how they hold out as time goes by.

A vulgar display of power!

TSmith:
I had pretty strong 3rd gear clash from the start but now at 10500 it only happens when cold so I too keep the rpm's low when shifting to prevent clash until warmed up. After that, it's hardly noticable. You kinda develop a technique to eliminate clash even when cold. As long as the transmission doesn't make any noises once engaged and continues to perform well with the Cummins, I quess I won't worry about it.

BTW MikeR, thanks for the wheel, looks great!
Ron.

I noticed the same little clash going to third. At 1200 miles and a heavy tow this past weekend, I noticed that is has almost completely gone.

I haven't had any gear clash problems so far, have 4000 mi. on transmission, with several long fifth/wheel trips, have fun!

Had same problem with mine but it went away at about 3500 miles.
Try shifting at 2200 r. p. m. mine seemed to shift better at that r. p. m. speed I think it likes to shift in the higher r. p. m. range

I agree with bigwheel, nearly all clash is gone since I put some miles on this thing(12,000). But if you are really lazy and light on the throttle between 2nd and 3rd, it will hesitate a little. Seems to like shifting at slightly higher RPM's with a little more aggression. Nothing that bothers me though, keeps getting better.

True... all my shifts are at 2500rpm (2800 hillclimbing) except for going to 6th,then its 2200rpm.

Glad you like it Ron!

For what it's worth,yesterday a customer of
mine,a Dodge salesman(25yrs)told me that there is a problem with the way the gears were cut on the new 6spd. I don't know if he has inside info or just full of it. If it's true I hope D. C. takes care of it for you guys. This is only hear say. I hope someone can get to the bottom of this. Good luck... .

I had the same gear clash going to 3rd for 156,000 miles on My 5 speed Toyota from day one. It has a lot to do with how you shift imo. The better you match gear box to engine speed the less gear clash. I think some of it is "normal". I'll bet going to 3rd moves more gear clusters around in the box than any other gear other than reverse. jmo...

I have noticed a slight bit of gear clash in my 6 speed going from second to third. It is less noticeable when I am towing my gooseneck trailer... don't understand that one. Maybe because I shift at higher rpms when towing. I am happy to hear that this seems to go away with a few miles.
