If you're getting decent mileage, don't get the flash. I had the flash (TSB 18-037-04 ) done on Tuesday. Traveled through two tanks, 95% highway with my camper in the truck. Here's the results:

Before flash:

Computer 12. 1

Hand calc 12. 6

After flash tank 1

Computer 13. 3

Hand calc 12. 2

After flash tank 2

Computer 13. 0

Hand calc 11. 8

The computer is less accurate, and I lost . 5 MPG. The computer shows better MPG, but actually getting less. Dealer told me he can't reload the old program.

600 mpg reflash

I just called my contact at the Cummins Hot Line. He verified the TSB is 18-037-04 which is the TSB provided by someone else last week on this site. It was released the 27th. Good luck with your relashes!!!!

600 smoke

I took my 600 in today for reflash. I have'nt driven far enought to check mileage, but I now have T/C lockup in second gear which was worth the trip

in my opinion.

I can routinely get over 20mpg with my 600, but I'm still getting the flash performed on Wednesday. I hate standing on the sideline wondering if it can do better. I know it's a big gamble, but I'm willing to take the chance. May have to drown my sorrows in some Old Milwaukee over this... we'll see. If your already getting really good mileage like me, you may want to hang on and see what happens with my rig first. I'll post how the overhead reacts on Weds night, with hand calc figures to follow a few days later

If it doesn't work, surely you can find something better than old milwaukee to drown your sorrows!!!! :D :D :D

I wold really like to get the re-flash as I am not too happy with my mileage... So I called the dealer on Friday and asked about it and he said sure bring it on in and we can take care of it for you..... only problem... . the damn mechanics are still on strike. So I have to wait for them to go back to work before I can get it done!

I made appointment to take my truck in. But they wanted to do fuel consumption test first to determine if this TSB is what I need.

I am surprised that they are doing this for TSB. I thought that was lame, but we'll see how it turns out tomorrow.

Just wondering...

I was just curious, does this TSB also effect the torque? I was thinking the 2005 Cummins hasn't really changed over the 04. 5, but all of a sudden the torque numbers are up to 610. Is it just a coincidence it happened about the same time as this reflash? They very well could have been using this firmware in the production line for the last month before releasing it as a TSB.

Interesting thought... very interesting

Probably the only way we would ever find out is if somebody has some inside information from Cummins or DC. Maybe OT-OF-HERE!! can ask his guy at Cummins ;)

No need to drown sorrows as of right now!! Oo. Just got my truck back and overhead figures are between 1½ and 2 mpg better than before, also the slight ping is gone. On the way home I had the truck at 75 mph on a flat stretch of highway that I drive everyday and the overhead was stuck at 19. 9. Usually at that speed it's down in the 17's. By the time I got home, which involved a few stoplights and rush hour traffic it was at 21. 4. So, as of now, strictly by the overhead display, it looks to have increased my already good mileage by a little bit. And who says Old Mud is bad stuff?? It says fine premium beer on every can!!! :-laf :D

I'm very pleased with the flash.

I think that 10 ft-lbs difference is in the noise for variability. I wouldn't be surprised if Cummins didn't really change anything, just determined that enough of the test engines exceeded 610 ft-lbs to make the claim.

I just got back from an 1800 mile trip to. from Denver. Got 18. 5 MPG going and 20. 9 returning. See other thread on the TSB for details.

TSBs,...how do they work. For example,......

I'm confused. If we have someone who works at a dealership who really knows what's happening here,... I'd appreciate the input. Not that someothers might not,... but here goes,... I physically got a hold of the TSB for the 18-037-04. In it it says that other TSBs will be eliminated for input of this TSB.

Well I was at my dealership on Sept 10-22nd to get this White Smoke thing worked on also an obvious miss due to more bad injectors. They replaced the last 3 injectors and then found one of those was bad,... that made 7 new injectors since about mid August. When I picked it up they told me they had installed the latest TSB. Well on my paperwork it said 18-007-04 which came out last Feb. Then I kept hearing that the new TSB was out on the White Smoke and MPGs. My Cummins contact hadn't verified it so I waited till Oct 4, as directed by him and checked again. He said it was out and the TRP for the fix was now DCXs TSB 18-037-04. I was a bit confused since I had seen that thread for a week or so,... . but I scheduled a trip to my dealership for the new TSB. The Service writer pulled up something while I was on the phone and then responded that I could bring it in for the TSB 18-037-04. The next morning I went and he came to the waiting room in aobut 10 mins and said they didn't or couldn't load anything else as it showed I had the latest upgrades.

My confusion is that according to Cummins, the release date wasn't till 9/27 which was 5 days after I picked up my truck when it had been in last. How do you get a reflash on something they didn't even have yet? Also the 27th happened to be 3 days after someother member started his thread on TSB 18-037-04 being out. See where I'm at on this?? So the math doesn't work. And as far as the TSB then I seriously doubt I got it. And if I didn't then why not? And if a TSB requires that all previous TSBs be eliminted b-4 they can be reflashed into the computer then what happens to the things that may have been benefited by any previous TSBs that aren't in the discription of the new TSB? Does the new TSB then just overlap anything previous and include what was previous also besides what is being installed? What happens if the two TSBs have a conflict in the way they are approaching a fix on a given item?

Bottom line,... I'm not at all convinced that many of us have gotten the new fix for the MPGs which would explaing a lot of things regarding some of these posts.

Well I had my flash done last week, since then I towed my 5er (21k gross) over 500 miles. No difference in fuel mileage (I use to own a 2001 and the person I traveled with this weekend still does) and my mileage is about ¾ mpg less then his. We have traveled over 5k together since I got this truck and my mileage has not changed compared to Mike Brolins truck. As far as I can see my smoke at start up is still the same, in fact while in Sisters, Oregon this weekend elevation is 4,000 something the temp was 25 degrees, I let the grid heater cycle once started the truck, it ran on 5 cylinders for about 10 seconds with a ton of smoke then all was fine.

The only things that I have noticed that is different my speedometer is closer to what my GPS says now and the motor seems to be a little smoother with a different sound to it.
