As this thread has already been hijacked with the high idle questions, I have one of my own. Does any one have the procedures that the DC tech has to go through to enable it? I had my truck in a couple of months ago for this and the tach said he was unable to enable it.

This TSB is for the '04 trucks, but the procedure should be the same. Look on the 2nd page, step 3 under "Repair Procedure".

I am newbie to most of what is being discussed and I've tried to educate myself as much as possible before asking this question. When a TSB comes out that involves a reflash of your computer, does this version contain all fixes to date? I would think that it would but I wanted to be sure so that I would not be looking at past TSB's that are along the same line.

In my case of wanting the high idle, it would be to help warm up my rig during winter when I start it at work. And if you do have a high idle feature, it helps cut down on the cylinder wash that is the cause of concern for the extended idle periods that people talk about.

I bought my truck about a month and a half ago, how long has this update been out?

Around town I get 15-17 mpg, and on the freeway I'll get 18. 5-21 according to the overhead. I haven't hand calculated, but a friend w/ a similar truck has the same readings and his actual counts are higher.

Do I need the new update?

According to the TSB it's for engine serial numbers 57130285 - 57246361 with an engine date of manufacture of 12/102003 through and including 08/17-2004.

How you find that info on our trucks I don't know.

It's on a tag on the drivers side of the valve cover on the engine.

600 Reflash

Frankly I think we're ahead of ourselves a bit as it's not October and according to the Cummins tech I worked with,... sometime in October they (Cummins) expects to release to DCX their TRP (Technical Repair Procedure) for White Smoke and Fuel Mileage. 1st of all we all know by now that 18-007-04 wasn't what the TSB the Cummins Tech referred to since it came out I believe last Feb and was for Miss, Stumble and White Smoke. It said nothing about mileage improvement characteristics except I will tell you I have had this TSB on my truck now for a couple weeks and mine is up about 4 mpgs. I can't say for sure it was the TSB alone that was responsible for the mpg increase since they also replaced my last injector at the same time. The TSB 18-037-04, identified on another thread is suppose to be for MPGs and White Smoke and is from DCX. I called Cummins right after I saw that thread and that TSB mentioned, and asked if it was the same and they said they couldn't see how as they haven't released their TRP to DCX yet and won't until sometime in October. While I'm really pleased that some of us are getting relief from lousy fuel mileage I still think we need to stay tuned for what Cummins releases. I plan to call next week and every week thereafter until it's released and will post the numbers. The only thing I'm confused on is that Cummins has TRP #'s and DCX uses TSBs. I suppose when DCX takes the data and sends to their dealer body then it becomes a TSB. Don't know, but guessing on that.

I have a 2004 1/2 3500 and a Banks Six Gun kit. I only have 7500 miles and am getting about 14mpg. I will put in a request for the flash next service call and see what they say. Does gear ratio come into play when they determine whether or not they give you the upgrade. Or is it determined by the white smoke issue?

It didn't have anything to do with gear ratio. TSB 18-007-04 is for Miss, Stumble, and White Smoke. So other member posted TSB 18-037-04 that HE said was for MPGs and White Smoke. And per Cummins there is another one still coming for MPGs and White Smoke sometime in October.

Thanks for all your work in researching this and follow-up communications with Cummins. Please keep us posted. Intresting to note, I called Cummins and asked about TSB 18-037-04 (for MPG, white smoke & overhead recalibration) and the guy I talked with said they were not aware of that TSB, that it must be a DCX thing.

Kind of explains the Cummins TRP vs DCX's TSB. Glad you have a contact at Cummins who is "tuned in". Should we start a new thread for the October - Cummins TRP reflash?

Had TSB 18-037-04 done yesterday - don't have any miles on the truck to evaluate improvement. Driving home from the dealer (31 miles) the overhead indicated 20. 1 avg. I don't believe it.

I just asked the the service manager to do it - didn't mention any particular problem. On the repair order he entered "customer complains of white smoke at startup, checked, found white smoke at startup. "

thank the lord, I hope your milage does improve because I have a ton of customers that are calling me about the mileage and it would be nice to know if this flash really works!

I posted on the other thread on this subject that I just took a trip from Tucson to Denver and averaged 18. 5 MPG for 900 miles at 70-75 MPH. I had the TSB done the day before I left Tucson. :)

I too had the upgrade done today and as others have noted, I saw the the overhead went from 12. 1 to reading 14. 5. I was not able to do extensive driving today, but on the freeway home, I was getting 18. 9 wheras before it would be about 16 mpg. Driving aroung town today I noticed that the overhead stayed at 16mpg or better where as before it hung around 12mpg. I have not had a chance to do hand calc's yet, everything is based on the overhead display at this time.

I put 19. 5 wheels and tires on one day, and the next day had the TSD done. So far 400 miles around town and 50 miles highway. 17. 2 MPG

Tim

I called my dealer and they said bring it in. I am going to get the injector knock looked at too. Hope I am doing the right thing with this flash. I don't see how it could be much worse then it is now.
