600 Reflash

I had called both the DCX hotline and the Cummins Hotline on this. I was told they had been working on this since the 600 came out. This is the number the dealer just gave me this AM. Do they ever rework TSBs?

Anyone have a TSB number that I can have. I need it soon because I am due for oil change at the dealership for only 29 dollars :) Thats this saturday.

Thanks!

Oh this is my first post. I have a 2004. 5 Dodge Ram 2500 with 48RE and 4x4 quad cab Laramie long bed. I have already lifted the front with leveling kit 2 inches and 35" tires. I get about 14-15 mpg empty.

Hey Boostn, welcome. Be sure when you go in for service to have them recalibrate your ABS module for the 35" tire. best method is to find out from the manufacture what the RPM's (Revolutions Per Mile)are for that particular tire then you can just hand them the number to plug in.

It will correct not only your speedo but your odo also. With the odo turning slower on those 35's your mpg calcs will be low.

so... ... . is this for real, or did Ot-Of-Here get snookered by his dealer?

I know I emailed DC and Cummins, and both replied that they knew nothing about a new reflash. Of course, that doesn't mean there isn't one coming out, just that the minimum wage person replying doesn't know about it. I am very interested in this thread.

Ot-of-Here, let us know what change, if any, you get in mileage ASAP

I think that we are all chasing rainbows on this one. I also think that the bad mpg's that some of us get, is what it is and ain't going to change anytime soon. There, I said it and I still don't feel any better.

Ok, I checked by my VIN to see if this TSB is out there on the above link and it told me that "No Incomplete Recalls or Customer Satisfaction Notifications Exist".
Doesn't work that way, TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) is simply a bulletin of known problems and a fix for it. Consumers are not notified of TSB's. Only Recalls consumers are notified on. Recalls are usually safety related. TSB's are on file to help nail down the consumers complaint.

Maybe... . maybe not. That TSB for white smoke is interesting because it's a software reflash. A software reflash to fix white smoke?? To me that can only mean a change to the fueling map. White smoke sounds like a fueling issue and once corrected could lead to better mpg's.

I don't see a white smoke/software issue in any other area other than fueling.

Keep us informed

I have a 3500 pulling a 5th wheel, Mfg 2,04. Getting 9. 8 pulling and on the hwy 13. 5 empty. Sure hope the TSB come out and will help. Very unhappy, as I had a 99 Dodge 2500 pulling the same trailer, got 12. 5. 19. 5 empty.

I did add 15% to the mileage in my estimate how much offset the 35in tires does compared to factory. So thats how I got the figure for mpg. By the way, I don't think I want them to correct it. I figure I can get extra 10,000 miles on my 70,000 miles warranty by leaving it uncorrected. :D

To ALL who have read this post,... READ THIS if you don't read another thing:

Yes and NO to folks who have questioned this post. Did I get dupped by the dealer? More like misunderstanding by my dealer but not by the Cummins hot line. What does that mean?? Well my dealer thought what he had in the way of info from STAR was the TSB that I was referring to when I alerted him to the original info of there being a TSB for this condiiton. When I realized,. . tks to the input of several of you in the past couple days that the TSB my dealer did on my truck was an old one then I called the 1-800 Diesels (Cummins Hot Line) again yesterday. I asked for Jerry again and he told me exactly what he had the first time and the information I put on this site was 100% accurate per what Jerry told me,... that a TSB for MPGs and White Smoke was being developed by Cummins per his contact within Cummins who does these updates and that it would/should be out/ready in October. He reconfirmed it yesterday. He told me to call back in a couple weeks and see if they had the actual TSB #. He also said DCX probably didn't know about this TSB at the dealer level. If you choose not to believe this info then don't,... if you choose to pester this guy and call them then do,. . but what I have said previously was accurate. Have a nice day.

O-O-H, I don't think that any of the doubtful sentiments in this thread were directed toward your information about the upcoming flash's validity. I believe they will release a TSB for this. My doubt questions if that new flash will do any good! I certainly hope it does, but if it makes a 12MPG truck a 19MPG truck, I'll eat a bowl of dirt. My last post saying "this is an old flash" wasn't directed toward you, but toward the feller who thought he had received the flash you're talking about. Personally, I'm excited to see if this new flash fixes the majority of the MPG problems so the 600's can have the rep they deserve. I just question how a flash is going to improve MPG that much when there's already trucks with the old software getting 17-20MPG. Are they going to get 23-25MPG after the flash? I think not. I guess we'll just all have to wait and see! Keep hounding those folks at Cummins and let us know when you find a TSB # for this one. Good work! :)

Same here. I was not directing any negativism toward you. I have been lied to by my dealer several times (I don't know if it was intentional, or ignorance).

Anyhow, OT-OF-HERE, you do have our support, and I think we all hope for the best outcome for this. I personally have not been able to get any info out of DC or Cummins, so I am impressed. By the way, how did this last reflash do? Did it help at all?

Should this be a sticky so we can be updated if we want to find this thread?

Thanks! I am going in for oil change this saturday. Should I even bother to try the old TSB if my truck hasn't recieved it yet?

It seems, no it's clear that there are two different kinds of 600 engines.

Those with good mileage and those with very loww...

Confusing?

I'd dare to say not. Most probably they use more than one software in the production of that engine. DC has not yet released the latest update of the SW sheet so I have no hard facts but I'm rather sure that's what's going on.

It's always been that way with DC products. Several softwares during the production become then updated into a single SW for that application.

Just for an example, during the production of the MY 98. 5 there have been more then 20 different SW's used. Today they use only ONE... .
