I was talking with Rich Gellett, the owner of Gillett diesel in Bluffdale Utah today. He said that if I got some 300hp injectors and had the pump taken off and got the pump rack travel increased from ~12mm to 21mm by his shop that the 5. 9B motor was capable of pushing enough fuel to make AT LEAST 500hp. This mod has pegged a 1800 degree pyro (pre-trubo) and distroyed a few motors in his shop. How come I have never heard of this mod on this forum? Has anyone had this done?

Why would you want to mod a reliable engine to a point where it has destroyed engines (your quote) just to reach an empirical horsepower number?

Just don't understand that mindset... .

No wars intended, just wondering what would drive someone to make mods that will knowingly be beyond the physical limits of the materials in the engine. ;)

I'm all for 600rwhp for $400.

I'd do it once... . learn from it and build it stronger the next time.

Afterall, we do have the option of letting off the 'go' pedal when we see EGT's we don't like... ... it's not like we run around with the EGT's pegged all the time... . or do we??!! :D

Matt

this just in: Wait a minute... just becasue the pump will flow 500hp worth of fuel... that doesn't mean that the engine will make 500hp..... am I naive in thinking this or am I justified?

A 1000cfm Holley off a Blown and alcohol injected BBC doesn't make the same power on a pinto motor does it?

holeshotholset: If your not breaking parts you get to drive it tomorow. I like your style though. If you do this an hx-40/16 will be necessary. With the 91% tc that I have and the fact that I live at 4500 feet of elevation would make turbo lag about 5 minutes. That is unless I adjust the afc to smoke out all other trafic on the road. Then it might only be one minute. Mabey a turbo from QuickKurt would be the best way out. But with a more restrictive housing to make it driveable, the egts might not come down signifacantly.

My style has always been: race what 'ya brung..... and have fun doin' it!

Since most of the high HP mods I always talk/dream about on this forum are somewhat limited to non-daily driver use... . I accept the fact that I'm going to be breaking parts, to me that's 1/2 the fun.

Learning how to make the big HP is what I'm trying to do now..... then when it blows up I'll learn how to make it stronger and what to avoid next time.

These engines are extremely resilient to most BOMBs, and I'm confident that I'll be able to take it to the outer limits and back smiling from ear to ear the whole way!

Kurt's turbo is really sweet, I'm seriously considering one in the meantime before my TWIN TURBO insanity begins.

Matt - Keep 'em in plenty of boost!

It ca be true. With all the cheep mods, my truck is above 300hp. A set of 370's will put me past 400, but my egt's are passing 1500 and still going. I am also hitting 45psi unloaded at 100 in 5th.

You do have the better pump, though... . grrrr!

I'm starting the cheap mods and so far, I like what I see/feel... the pavement in my city has never been the same since!

Your stock turbo (if that's what you're still running... . ) is hating life! haha COOL!!

Now what would a Holley carb be doing on an injected engine...

Hmmmmm

Well, I have to admit I watched an imressive 12v truck on the dyno in Vegas earlier this year. He made 450 at the wheels. His pump was worked on by Gillette I believe he said.

But $400 will hardly get you a set of injectors.

hmmmm

HVAC,

Was that with a 215 pump or a 160/180 pump. I think its quite easy for the manual guys to get 400+ with a 12v. Its the automatic guys, like me, that seem to think 400+ is a lot of money.

Well I have to live in the real world as my 96 has to pull my camper, wife, kids and trusty motorcycle. I'm pushing 300 hp and can easily reach 1300 degrees without towing anything. I can't afford a new engine so my hp won't be going much higher than it is now.

With the 175-180 hp pump worked with a torque plate and 370 or DD#3 injectors, you may be close to 400 hp but 370 hp is more likely, even with a 16 or 18. 5 cm2 turbine housing on the HX35. EGT's will be too high, though, so you will really need the HX40 and 4" exhaust behind it.

About 3 years ago I proved you could get 408 hp out of a 215 engine with just a torque plate, turbine houing, and low restriction 3" muffler. That is, if you don't mind 1800 deg egt or so (your engine will mind it, however, and later on, your wallet). The point today is to balance the fueling, airflow, and egt.

You don't need a pump shop if the pump is otherwise OK, just the right add on stuff like torque plate, AFC spring, governor springs (if more rpm is desired). It's also a good idea to bump the pump timing to around 15-16 deg. Just don't listen to the shadetree guys who tell you to shove the torque plate all the way forward. At the Texas rally I'll show you the components of a P7100 and in particular the $1 pin that can shear if you don't use the torque plate to stock the rack before 21 mm travel. The pin takes out $1000 in governor parts, by the way, when it breaks.

Since I have the only documented 600 hp Ram on this list using only #2 Diesel and ambient air as a source of oxygen, I think I can comment on the cost. Either I'm dumb and have wasted money, or you can't do it for anything like $400.

My vote... listen to Joe. He's a Doctor, though he doesn't play one on tv... ;)

When I first read this thread, I was a skeptic... and I still am.

Whatever this place said they could do for $400 must be a really cheap NOS kit... . or the guy really thought that the person reporting this info. was cute! :)

All jokes aside, I'm going for the tried and true method of 600rwhp... it'll take a while, but once I'm there it's going to be TURBO DIESEL NIRVANA!!!
