Code P0106 when towing, did a search, no help found

Hello all, hoping for some help here. I have done some searching for my answer but just can't find it.

I have a 2007. 5 Dodge Ram 2500 with the above transmission.

My question is about the shifting points and when the trans should shift. Currently mine is shifting and is running in 6th gear at about 42 mph.

When I start from dead still and not dogging the truck it shifts really fast through the gears. I can run at 30 mph in 5th gear locked.

It seems like it is shifting really fast through the gears.

When shifting from drive to reverse there is a popping noise like it is being forced into gear and the when going from higher speeds to lower the truck doesn't seem to down shift and I have to use either the exhaust brake or all pedal to get the truck slowed down.

I am unsure if the TC is going or the Trans but want some information so I kind of know what to expect.

The reason I am asking is because the truck doesn't seem to run the same as when I got it.

I have changed the oil and both filters in transmission.

I have had it to the dealership a few times and they tell me nothing is wrong run it till it dies. Which is great for them cause they don't have to pay for it when it breaks.

Any insight would be great.

Shifting into 6th at 42 MPH (at light throttle) is what mine does. The Torque Converter will lock at ~32 MPH. If you want higher shift points, just run it in Tow Haul.

You do not need to use tow haul mode to change the shifting points. On my truck there is a toggle switch +/- on the gear selector. I lock out 5 and 6th gear by using the toggle switch I will press the + sign when I start out (every time the truck is started up) and shift to 4th gear only. I use this to drive around the city and when I am under 45 MPH in the country. My truck will be turning about 1800 to 2000 RPMS in 4th at 45 MPH. I have 3:73 gears and stock size tiers. Mine is an 08 bought in Nov 07.

Also the diesel engine will not provide engine breaking; so the truck will not slow down like a gas vehicle will. This is why an exhaust brake was developed for diesel trucks to help with slowing down the truck without wearing out the brakes.

Jim W,

@ Newt, Thanks for the information. At least I know it is not just me and it is something the truck is meant to do.

@ Cummins12V98, I have always been told running the Tow/Haul without actually towing or hauling something is bad for the Transmission. I saw an excerpt in another post stating Dodge says it can be used for towing, hauling or light city driving. So does it have the potential to wear out the transmission faster.

@ Jim W, I have been running it in 5th set from the shift selector and running the engine brake at the same time. I have never run it in 4th under 45 mph ever. I was told once the truck performs better when running the higher rpms around 1800-2200. I will try this to see if the truck runs better.

Overall it sounds as though it is me thinking there is more wrong with it than there is, it just seems different to me for some reason but it could be just the amount of miles on the truck.
