I have 2001 ram 2500 4x4 H. o. 6spd. it has 46k on it,when gear oil is cold I feel it going in to gear. It doesn't grind! does it mostly in 2nd and 3rd ! What should I use for gear oil??

Hello mmason

Welcome to the TDR. You're lucky if you just have notchy cold shifts, I have a full-blown grind into 4th and sometimes 3rd. There is a TSB 21-009-01 to replace parts in the transmission but it doesn't sound like many dealers are familiar with it or confident doing it.

Jury's out on different oils because of the disclaimer tag on the transmission that states you have to use a specific oil or the warranty is voided. There's been some posts indicating DC can't legally do this unless they provide the oil for free.

Oil aside there is strong indication that NVGear had some faulty/poorly designed syncros installed in 6spds up till Feb '01 so this grind is based on known facts.

MMason,

My local Dodge dealer is installing new transmissions for the problem that you are having. Currently Dodge warranty is allowing a trans replacement, updated parts for the lower shaft which require a heavy press to install or they are allowing the entire lower shaft to be replaced. There is speculation that Dodge my start an exchange rebuilt trans program since warranty dept. has started requiring the old trans to be shipped back. I just missed buying a warrenty 2002 trans they sold to a core buyer for $100 bucks just to get it out of their shop!:( :( I would recommend that you tell your dealer that a new trans is needed and due to inability to have your truck in the shop overnight, please order a new trans for a one day install:) .
