Radiator replacement a real PITA

High Idle

Chrysler discontinued the radiator for the 3 gen, a long time ago. Is this an '04, or an '04.5? Big differences. The factory fan clutch is also discontinued (at least for the '03/early '04)

I recently installed a GPD radiator that is slightly thinner core than the original, 1-1/4 vs 1-1/2 inch. The original core was two rows of tubes with a space between the rows, 3/16 inch or so. The new GPD radiator is one wide tube, so about the same surface area as the OEM. Mine was leaking as the shroud contacted the core at a point where the fan wiring harness exited the shroud. The new radiator with the thinner core give it some space, no contact.

Here is my thread on the radiator replacement..... https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/radiator-replacement-a-real-pita.273884/

Whatever you do, do not watch the Youtube videos. Every darn one of them has you removing the A/C condenser and twisting the hoses around, and removing the intercooler, for a radiator replacement. These components stay in place, no need to remove them.

If Geno's is out of GPD radiators, Rock Auto has them for about the same price. Only other aftermarket radiator of stock design and reasonable price is the Spectra but I think the GPD is a good looking quality radiator. Geno's sells it.

By all means, get a genuine Cummins thermostat. it will work properly. I've had it with non factory thermostats after 45 years or more of messing with faulty aftermarket stuff.

If you do not know the age or condition of hoses, now would be the time to replace everything, including the two short connector hoses on the heater pipe under the exhaust manifold. My alternator had bearings making some noise so it went to the shop, and I installed a new tensioner and water pump and belt while I had everything out.

I used Zerex G05 gold antifreeze. About three gallons of concentrate and three gallons of distilled water.
