Speak of the devil, he'll have a Getrag for sale soon.

You'll have to change flywheel, flywheel adaptor, clutch, bellhousing, pedals. Add clutch master cylinder and related lines; cut hole in floor for shifter; cut driveshaft, or make two piece set up; change/ recalibrate speedo. I'm sure I'm missing a few things.

If the truck is in good shape, and you can get the parts cheap enough (buy him some beer and a Greek chic... ... ;) ) it may be worth it. I looked into it 4 years ago, and it would have been close to $3000 in parts alone to convert (now) Mom's pickup. Unless you are really attached to it, you can put in a built auto or sell it and get one with a 5 speed.

Daniel

CB,

Do you not have a slushbox in your truck now? I see your sig says yes. ;)

dpuckett,

There is not a thing wrong with the trans or the truck. I have about 70,000 miles on the truck. The entire truck is in mint condition. It was driven by an older fellow only on sunny days. The problem is I will start school in the fall and will have a bit of a drive at highway speed. The problem is the 2200 rpm at 60mph. The truck will not go to much faster than that unless I put it in nutral going down a steep hill. :D :D :D As for attachedment to the truck, if I could find a 5 speed in as good condition and low miles I would sell this one, but I hear a truck with this many miles is hard to come by.

Robert, I will send you a PM in a few minutes... I might have exactly what you're looking for (Getrag, pedal assembly, EVERYTHING)

John

Heck if your going to do the swap, why not go with a better transmission such as the 4500 or 5600? That is unless you have a getrag sitting around. Bill

Wouldn't a 518 be a faster swap. Get a 89 or 91% converter. I will bet a aftermarket over drive would be cheeper than a getrag swap. I have a cdt 5 speed in the 90 that I will put in my 93 But everything I need is free I owned and drove(beet) the parts truck sence 94.

Robert,

Let me know if go through with the swap. I'll take the 727 off your hands!:) No kidding!

Just get the nv4500. It's a nice, strong transmission and it's not a slushbox.

Make sure you get the updated 5th gear nut... . the 1 3/8 input shaft and fully splined mainshaft help if you're going for BIG hp. :D

wink wink... ;)

What is the rear end ratio in your truck. From the 2200 rpm and 60 mph speed numbers it sounds like you have the 4:10, a switch to the 3:54 would make quite a difference and would be a lot cheaper than going to the 5spd. In addition check to make sure that your throttle is opening up all the way. If the pump is still at stock settings you should be able to run the rpm up to at least 2400-2600 rpm.

Wow. What a responce. This is great. Thanks!:)

First to adress the 518. The problem is I love driving standard, so naturally if I'm going to change the trans. I may as well do it right and get a stick.

Secondly in saying I want a stick, I would love a NV5600 and if I could afford it I would do it. The problem is I am saving (attempting at saving??? ) money for school and I figure I can get a Gutbag for cheaper than a NV5600 which at least lets me have a stick and solves my RPM issue. And no I have none, zip, nada, not a one Getrag part lying aroung. But yes, a NV5600 is definetally the ultimate than one day when the money is there, I may take out the gutbag and put in the 6 speed.

As for the rear end ratio, it is 3. 07's so I can only imagine what 4. 10's must be like. As for being able to rev higher I can. I have gotten the truck to go a little faster than 70MPH.

My turn. What happens to the transfer case when you change to a gutbag? Are there any different parts that would be needed? What about the trans tunnel, does anything change there? Any other thoughts on the over all conversion? Your responces are very much appreciated. Thanks.

Robert

[What happens to the transfer case when you change to a gutbag? Are there any different parts that would be needed?] - Yes the transfer cases are different on the getrag vs auto, if you do a search or a more knowledged person responds they can tell you exactly, something about the t-case input splines being different?? I have a 91 W250 with the 727, and after reading all the swap info for the past year or so, if I wanted to upgrade this, I would 'stick' with the auto and go to a A518 or 2nd gen lockup auto. Which to me seems easier than going all the way to a stick. Yes I love my stick better than an auto, but I say enjoy what you have, if not, buy another 1st gen with a stick, and have both. Bill

BSchwarzli-

If you in fact have 3. 07s, you have some issues. Mom's 92 w/ 3. 54 will go 70 in 3rd, and I havent touchd the governor in it. My 4. 10s will go 68 in 4th (5 speed). You should be able to see 75-78, at the very least; I think jaynes sees 85. Check your throttle cable, and see if you have some slack in the cable under your dash, esp where the pedal meets the cable. Every one I've had did.

Daniel

He must be worried when he gets above 65, the cummins might sound like its about to come apart up against the governor, I thought my 91 would only do around 70 cause I was used to the 89-5speed at 70mph and around 2000rpm, but with the 3. 07, 727 the rpms were screaming. That is until one day I was really mashing on it and went wide open with the 727 and seen near 80mph, but PO has played with the pump on the 91, full fuel cap is gone. Bill

I can hit 80 in 4th. I can peg the speedo in 5th and keep going.

I've got 3. 54's, so you should be able to do better than that... but then again, have you touched the high idle?
