Assuming the writers got it right, congratulations to Cummins and Ram for raising the torque ratings and for authorizing the towing weights that many people already tow and have been towing for many years.
 
Let's see how all this flies when we see $5. 00/gallon + fuel again. What I would like to see is a 300 HP option with DEF to offset the FE advantage that the Punishment Agency has taken away from later model trucks.
 
Looking at the shapes of the torque and BHP curves, it certainly looks like an ECM programming change. Look how flat the curves are for the 350/650 engine - these are programmed limits in the ECM. These ECM limits have obviously been raised or removed on the new engine. Otherwise, the curves track on top of each other.



So, what enabled them to do this? Engine mechanical mods? Additional cooling? Transmission mods? Some, all or none of the above? I guess we'll see.

That's great news. Interpreting the torque curve I see peak of 800 ft. lbs. at 1500 rpm tapering off to 700 ft. lbs. at 2500 rpm which is precisely where it will be useful. A real truck motor!

The horsepower curve is fattened up a bit in the middle range but don't know if it will be felt in the seat of the pants or not.

Edit: I too will be interested to learn, if we can, what Cummins has done to increase power output and what Ram has done to increase towing and GCWRs.

It updated again, calling it a new H. O. engine. I hope its just programing changes they can do. But its looking like it will not be.



Dang! I was really hoping I cold get in on that action. I wonder what the difference was. Everybody was dogging Dodge... errr RAM for falling behind. Now I'm wondering if that was the plan all along. Get Ford/GM to commit and then pounding them.

We'll if I can get my truck updated I'll be at the dealer ASAP. My 2011 Ram 3500 is only at 1400 miles. Its not underpowered, but I'll always take more (if it comes with the factory warranty).
 
A new powertrain control module (PCM) with revised performance calibration allows the High-Output 6. 7-liter, six-cylinder Cummins Turbo Diesel to reach peak torque at 1,600 rpm and exceed the previous model's output from 1,200 through 2,800 rpm. While peak horsepower remains unchanged (350 @ 3,000 rpm), the engine's new calibration delivers more than 40 additional horsepower at typical highway cruising speeds.

Just got my 2011, hope I can get an upgrade

I wonder when an increase will come for the manual folks?



The tq curve could be a little flatter, but hey thats still a TON of power.



I also noticed they are talking about a new rear axle. I am guessing its the same axle with the larger cover on it, something many of us already have.
 
Looks like my patience will payoff. Competition amongst the manufacturers is good because it results in improvements like this. I'll be looking forward to being an owner of one of these new and improved 2011. 5's !! Especially glad to see the improvement in max GCWR... ... ...
 
According to Allpar, the new engine will be badged as an HO. It will also have a different harmonic balancer and transmission cooler. On the dually, the rear end has been beefed up also.

If would be great if they would offer it for new owners like yourself but I would be surprised if Ram offers retrofit software to allow a 2010 or early 2011 to produce the power offered in the new HO version. If we learn that Ram offers the higher output levels without modifications to the drivetrain it should be easy enough to achieve the same power levels with aftermarket magic blackboxes.

Back when I bought my '01, Cummins dealers were still offering a performance upgrade for some earlier models, don't remember now what models the upgrade was for.
 
From what I can tell it looks like its only a DRW option, and does have some hard part changes to the trans and rear end(not sure that was needed based on the amazing track record of the AAM 11. 5). I also wonder if the turbo is different based on EB remarks.
 
I'm in the wait for a new 3500, just hard to think about parting with my 12V right now. I'm glad to see the change, and wonder if we are still in for any major changes for MY 2012? Seems these changes are just a band aid to catch up to the others.
 
Only for automatic transmission equipped trucks? Keep it. I don't want or need an auto, also with the current prices I can't begin to think about putting that much money into a truck.
