The Crew made it home from LA without any problems... except the hood release cable broke :{ Oh well, It was using much of any oil anyway! We got 14. 5 mpg and I had my foot into it most the way. So now I start my things I have to do list, followed closly by things I want to do list Oo. :-laf

Awesome. Oo. Oo. I'm so happy that it made it without any major problems.

I'll take a look around Jed's, I bet we have a spare hood release cable if you can wait a couple of days for it. :D

Update

Well I have been tinkering with this and that... .

I raised the gas peddle about 1" so that the throttle cable pulled straight through the firewall. I also re-adjusted the throttle linkage for the proper breakover and this made a big difference in getting my TV cable adjusted correctly.

Did a few minor tweaks to the pump so the power comes on much nicer now. :-laf I picked up a spare fuel pin to modify and ordered a new governor spring, will get my EGT gauge in before going further.

I had been periodically hearing a vibration (not the drive shaft one) noise coming from the rear area... I decided to look into the rear axle... since I needed to pull the rear drums off to figure out the problem with the e-brake anyways. I found a bad hub seal and brakes coated in gear oil... so while I'm repairing all of this, I figure it's a good time for me to throw in a detroit locker. I also found that I have 35 spline axles... Oo. I was expecting that they were 32 spline. I guess this axle came from a later model HD?

I also ordered some different lift blocks to correct the drive line angles... should put my drive shaft "in phase" and get rid of that vibration problem.

I will get some picks upon re-assembly. :D

Pulled the diff cover off tonight and found that the axle is equiped with a Power-Lok... you would never have known as the clutch packs are completely worn. So I think I just might rebuild the Power-Lok rather than going with the Locker...

Damn that sucks about the hub seal. I just did those. Either I screwed up, or something is up with that axle, keep an eye on it just in case. Amongst all that stuff I gave you should be a pair of "cans" that go over the hubs to try to prevent a seal failure from ruining the shoes. I just never got to put them on.

I was told that the axle came out of a 90 or 91 one-ton CTD SRW but I never saw the truck so all I have is what the guy said. I had no idea it had any LSD in it, must have been completely worn out.

It looks like the outer lip of the seal got damaged... which in of itself wouldn't cause the gear oil to escape as it still has a good inner lip. So I'm going to go with an oil bath seal and that should take care of it.

I'm also going to upgrade the spindle lock nut.

I'm going to pull out the LSD tonight and inspect it for rebuilding. Man was this thing worn out!!!

Update: Well I've had to completely rebuild the rear axle as this thing had been rode hard and put away dry... :-laf Friday I picked the PowerLok case up from the machine shop were I had the ring gear side bearing journal welded and machined. The bearing had spun on the journal, spitting a shim and the backlash was . 018 ! When I tore into the PowerLok rebuild I had never seen one so bad! The teeth were stripped off the steel plates and two had splits in them. The frictions were all down to galled metal.

With all new components in hand I began the re-assembly yesterday... I finished rebuilding the PowerLok and have it installed with . 007 backlash.

If all goes well, I should be road testing later today. Here are some various picks.

VDO gauge cups

Installed my gauge cups today.....

Hey Donald, you can see that I haven't done much with that wiring... :-laf

Those look nice. I like them better than the stuff available specifically for 1st gens. Guess you won't have any OD problems with that new 5-speed. Oo.

Speaking of OD problems... . I haven't had any since I adjusted the throttle breakover and then TV cable? I had ben thinking of removing the auxiliary wiring ;) , but you know how that goes... as soon as you remove it, it will start acting up again  :-laf

Throttle linkage....

I ordered the pieces from McMaster-Carr.

www.mcmaster.com
