Want to dump V10 in 2000 Ford Excursion

Xmass and new year things had been keeping me off from the garage until now.....

The crank is installed and main bearings clearance is checked, it turn out to be

0. 076 mm in every bearing, next thing is to check rod bearings and put in a piston

to measure the piston protrusion. Then took everything off again and start to shoe horn it inside to Suburan's engine bay... ... .

BTW few pics should be on the page soon.

Timo

Protrusion

The rod bearings are now checked and they are also 0. 076mm maybe a bit tighter, hard to say when using plastigage.....

I installed all the pistons without rings and measured piston protrusion which varies between 0. 45mm to 0. 48 depending on cylinder but it's actually really accurate, more on this on my page with a pic on Monday...

I'm going to do a second round of protrusion measurement tomorrow just to make sure..... and sleep better ;-)

Matt

Actually it will take a months before I can fire it up, this is just a trial assembly to check the clearances, I'm going to took everything off so that I have an empty block with oil pan and timing cover with accessories, what to lift back and forth on Suburban's engine bay... ... . it's a bit lighter when empty.

Timo

I agree... the head and block by themselves are heavy enough... . then you add the 150 pound crank and all the heavy rods, pistons... .

Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see the finished result...

Matt

CC

Just came back from the garage, finished second round of protrusion measurement, yep, it's same as last time. .

I also cc the valve pockets on the head, the intake is 9,3cc and exhaust 6,4cc they add up to 15,7cc.

I did a quick calculation of c. r. and it seems to be around 17. 44 but I need to double check it tomorrow,

now it's time to hit the bed and get a good night sleep...

The page will have a new pic tomorrow

Timo

It should startup just fine with that compression ratio... .

Not like some of the really insane pullers with 14:1 or lower compression... .

Matt

CR

Yeah, it should since stock cr is 17. 5:1 and I'm a bit below that. It doesn't make sense to use much lower than stock cr since we are facing the winter ones in a while and temps. like -25 to -30 Celsius. it would be a struggle to make it start on those mornings, no matter what kind of heater you have.

Timo

Okie folks, been moving from the Cummins to the engine bay of Suburban, next few months would be just taking off 454 and TH400 and doing new fasteners for the C and TF-727. After all the fasteners plus other mods are done, I will take it all out ones more and give the engine bay a fresh coat of paint and add some sound proofing insulations.

There are a few new pics on the page, I'll update it during the swap/ fabricating things

Timo: Looking good!

I bet that 'fuelie' 454 will bring some decent coin in Finland... I can't imagine that there's one for sale on every street corner... . :)

Keep up the good work!!

Matt

Yea, it should be worth of something, would be more with four bolt mains and TPI. at least ¼ mile race guys would like it with four bolt mains, although it’s easy to convert to accept four bolts. I got the transmission off yesterday and did some clean up in the garage to get more room to work. This evening I’m going to start to tear off the computer and it’s wiring harness. I’ll post pictures when trial fitting engine/transmission compo and doing the engine fasteners, since before that nothing interested isn’t going to happen, just boring typical things what needed to be done in the swaps.

Timo

Simply OUTSTANDING work you have done so far. I admire your style in doing stuff the machine shop said they couldn't do! Looks really good!

Darn!!!

Thanks pal, glad you liked my stuff, I just came home from the trails with my Jeep, there was snow like hell and I managed to break front cardan shaft in a deep ditch, we worked almost three hours to get it of the forest... . boy I'm exhausted, time to get a beer and hit the bed...

BTW the off pics should be on the Jeep section during monday

Timo

wiring diagram.....anyone?

Suburban dudes, please help me out, anyone had or know a good source for 1990 Suburban wiring diagram. Need it to trace down a bunch of wires, I took off the computer yesterday and it seems to be a clear case except a wires that are going in on the drivers side. I assume they are for speedo and cruise. Anyway I'm going to need the diagram when putting it all back together with Cummins, let me know.

Thanks

Timo

Never mind the diagram, I found a good manual from my warehouse (Ebay)

but if some of you guys who had done the swap before, have a pics of engine

to frame fasteners etc. I would be more than appreciate if you could mail the

pics for me, that way I may get some ideas and avoid bad design.

Thanks

I would love to see pictures as well for my conversion - posted to this thread or perhaps, Timo, you could post them on your website?

Yea, I think it's possible, maybe I could add one section for "tips for swap" or already done swaps. just mail the pics and I'll talk to my web master what is the space limit what I could use on that server.

Timo

Just came back from the garage, now it's in the bay on first time with the transmission,

I did try to locate it far and down as possible, took couple of pics. What you guys say whom are dealing with the swap before, did you leave the front "sub frame" on it's place or modify it a bit.

I know it's now without accessories, I'll bolt them on tomorrow to see the effects for the clearances.

Thanks

Timo
