Just got my truck back from body shop. They did poor work, but feels o. k. underneath. Out of country teenagers pulled in front of me on 55mph road and nowhere to go. I usually have 100gals. fuel and more tools than I need( to service my heavyequipment), so brakes don't work well in emergencies. Are rear discs the answer? It actually brakes hard, you just have to ease into them, to figure out which way truck is going to pull, then step down. Looking back, if I could have braked harder, damage could have been reduced($7,300. 00). Thanks, Barry

Welcome to the TDR

If you do a search for EGR disk brakes in the 1st gen forum. Your going to find a bunch of info.

There have been a few members that have bought one of the kits. Some like them. Others have had problems. During your search you will find my thoughts of the kit.

Its hard to beleave the insurance company payed that much to get it repaired. Most of the time they just total them and let you fend for yourself trying to find another truck.

Your truck doesn't look right. It has a straight front bumper. You never see that on our trucks. :-laf :-laf

What front leaf springs do you ahve under and what rims and tires that looks just like i want mine to look like just having ahard time finding what i need

They wanted to total it and give me 10,000. 00( 68k original miles). I begged and cried and finally they agreed to give me 7,300. 00 t0 have it fixed. They also tried to make me take a salvage title, which I also negociated away by whining and crying. Had 2 seperate appraisers come and value it- saved it.

NICE looking trucks guys, Makes me wish for a CC. (and paint :-laf )

BTW, are you still using the antilock brakes? If the controls are inactive, is the rear solenoid still in the loop. I hear frequent complaints of erratic antilock function if the solenoid is still there. Easy to remove.

I will agree that there are two separate opinions stongly held by many here at TDR regarding the antilock hack. I agree with it, others don't.

I have mine bypassed and the rears adjusted fairly tight and it stops well unless I am completely unloaded and hit them too hard. :)

I think my ABS is working. And it brakes well, once you figure out which way she's gonna pull. I just wish I could brake hard immediately, without worrying about veering off into a ditch or traffic. One thing for sure, I'm much more alert going thru that (particular) intersection!

Nice, is that stock color?

I believe the blue is a bit different from stock, just got the truck in September with 127k on it. Not the best paint job out there. . but damn good 5' truck ! Almost like driving it more then I do the '03. :D

My ABS is still hooked up, had been getting the ABS and brake lights coming on recently at idle, not sure what that is about. Tonight I jacked up the rear and adjusted the rears out quite a bit, have a much firmer pedal and e brake only goes down a couple of notches, not all the way to the floor. Hopefully that will help out the overall brake operation on this truck for a bit.

Check your vacumn system. Sounds like you might have a leak if the ABS light is coming on at idle then going off after you throw some RPM on the engine. There is a low vacumn switch. It is behind the left side hood hinge.

If your truck is pulling to one side or another, I'd suspect calipers or something on the front. Rears will sometimes make a difference, but not normally that noticeable. Also, check to make sure your front suspension and steering are tight. If the road is leaning one way or another, and you have something loose, that can make it pull one way or another under hard braking.

Check your vacuum supply, too. Not that it will help your braking, but may help the lights.
