My good, old '94 rolled 200K this past fall. Love this truck and had it since '95. It's been having some electrical issues that have worsened...

The tachometer needle fluctuates and sometimes rests at zero (mainly at idle) and the ampmeter shows discharging. The headlights and dash lights flash at the rhythm of the tach bouncing. Even the shifting of the truck is impacted by the tach and light activity.

The truck shifts from third to second while the lights/tach are doing there thing, for about 5 seconds and then returns to the proper gear.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've replaced the alternator, and batteries and had fairly mechanical friends try to assist.

Before I take it to the Chrysler dealer for their help with a scanner for my old truck, I figured someone out there might have experienced this.

Thanks!

Mark

All the symptoms of the engine speed sensor, mounted above the damper. You can try cleaning the contacts in the connector and making sure the spacing is good (. 049-. 051) above the damper but you will probably have to spring for a new one. Genos carries them. Make sure you order the one with the correct plug, pictures are on the website.

Bad ESS could cause these problems, as could a bad power feed to the PCM, poor ground(s), or a failing PCM.
What codes are you getting?

I had similar problems a few years back. Do a search and read my posts about it; they are long and detailed.
