2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Newbie '98 Question

I've been looking for a used dually. I came accross a white 1995 3500 CC auto dually with leather and a big camper shell with only 32K on it. Looks all stock, it was just traded in at a dealer. I think its a 3. 54 geared truck, will this pull a 10 to 11,000 pound trailer? I haven't test driven it yet, I figure the 160 hp won't be all that great. Asking price is a high $14,900. I've been looking for a 2001 or newer, I want the rear disc brakes but, this old 95 looks nice.

I don't think that is a high price if the truck is in good condition. I paid close to that for mine w/68k on the clock. Will it pull 10k-yes. Will you pass any one up a grade in its stock form-no. My 95 was a dog when I got it.

With a stock transmission you will be limited with upgrades. I ran a TST #6 fuel plate w/my stock transmission and it helped out a lot.

Well it actually has 27,454 miles on it. This 1995 3500 CC 2wd 3. 54 SLT runs better than the 2001's I test drove. The paint is faded but, its all there except for the peeling paint on the tacky Lund visor. The dealer just got it and they didn't detail it out much. It looks it's age and the tires are the originals. The truck does not smoke, trans shifts great, no vibrations at 90 mph, every thing works, all lights are good, AC is cold. The Century camper shell is a high rise. No hitches in the clean bed with a rubber mat, the factory reciever hitch has been painted. Rear axle is pretty dry with no rust, front end shows signs of a grease job. A little oil on the bell housing, the 47RH is dry, fluid looks good. No squeaks, I drove it on a rough road, its a tight truck.

Is it worth $14,900? The only thing I don't like is the rusty brush guard and the old original Goodyear GSA tires. The steering is a bit heavier than my 1998 gasser and much heavier than the 2003 dually. The spare has never been used.

What kind of fuel economy can I expect from a 160 hp 2wd dually? It feels strong enough to pull my trailer, hard to tell though. There is no sign of a brake controller or slide in tie downs. There was a CB with a mini antenna, the wiring is still there and its a nice install, very clean.

I'm very tempted to buy it if a bank will loan on a 1995.

bought a 96 dually 8 years ago. put a plate and brought it to a 230 , 610 and have been pulling 14500 with it ever since as you can see transmission mods were also made :D

I think it would be worth $14k. Try and find another used 30K mile truck for that price. Truck sounds solid.

I averaged 20-22 w/a #6 plate empty. Mine ran around stock fine empty power wise. When I towed my 7K toy hauler it could only do around 45 mph up most grades. It will tow anything w/in it legal limits, it will just be slow going up most grades.

If I needed a truck, I'd buy it.

Is It gas or diesel

I have a 95 Dodge diesel and a 2004 diesel. The 95 Is super and stock with the automatic trans. It my baby and Its a 25 foot motor Home. It had 32,000 on It last may when I bought It now has 42,000 and You better get It and dress It up so It looks like you respect It. :-laf

If I can get a bank to loan on it, I think I'm going to buy it. I've been looking for a work truck for too long.

I'm waiting on the bank now, the dealer came down to $13,900. I think thats a good price with less than 28,000 miles on it. I found the window sticker, its a LS 3. 54, has trailer package, Laramie (cloth), auto trans, rear ABS, some diamond plate and a rusty brush guard. I don't like the chrome mirrors, they are electric though. Too small for my 33' long travel trailer.

Both rear fenders are scratched, no dents. Did these trucks smoke at all? This one is very clean even when I stomp it. It smokes less than my work mates 2001 stocker.

Condition of cab's inside will help tell if indicated mileage is correct. Seats and pedals should show VERY little wear with so few miles. Get VIN number and see if Dodge will pull up it's maint. record for you. This could give some history such as warranty work, recalls, etc. and mileage when work was done.

I have a friend with a 95 and it has given good service. His mileage is about what others have stated for their 95 yr. trucks.

I bought it for $12,000. The miles are original, the truck was not a daily driver. Its way tight, pedals have very little wear, seats look new, head liner looks new. Paint is not bad, it did sit under a tree I would guess. I drove it to work today, I don't like the old tires, the front brakes squeak a little.

Any recommended shops around Salisbury, NC?

Wow, clean truck. It should get around 20-22 depending on how you drive it. Two recommendations to improve performance without hurting milage (if you keep driving it the same):

1) 3000 GSK (Governor Spring Kit). The '94 & '95's had a very low defueling RPM set up from Bosch/Cummins. The torque convertor is also very loos and when trying to climb a hill pulling a load, it won't rev high enough to shift and get the RPM's below the defuel point. I guess Dodge thought that would save the trans.

2) Different torque convertor. I put a #5 plate in my truck (first mod) and could not tell a difference! The next mod was a shift kit (no difference) then the T/C. BIG DIFFERENCE! The next mod was a set of 215 injectors, BIG DIFFERENCE. The 215's made about the same increase in acceleration as the T/C.

FWIW, I bought my '94 in '97 with 118k on it.

Nice

Nice catch. Once money settles out, Geno's Garage sells some really nice Cipa slide-out mirrors to replace the OEMs. I had the same problem with my travel trailer, and the Cipa mirrors did the trick. Installation is pretty simple. The Cipa instructions call for (I think) torquing the mounting screws to 18 inch pounds. This is critical to prevent vibration. I used a beam type torque wrench with a 0 to 25 inch pound scale. It's a 1/4 inch drive. :)

I'm going to change the TC, what valve body options are there on a RH? Shift kit or a complete valve body? The trans shifts like new so far. I'll be changing the hoses/belt, adding a TST plate kit and I'll take care of the KDP as the money allows. I need to buy new tires first, the goodyears are original and have some light side wall cracking.

The mirrors will have to go, they suck without a trailer. I'll check out the CIPAs.

Time to start searching the second gen threads. :)

If the seats are leather, they are not original. I ordered a new 95 in Sept 94 and leather was not an option. I sold my 95 last Nov for 16K. Only difference was that it was a 4WD, 5 speed and it had 80K on the clock. I pulled a 29" 5er to Alaska and back and to the Northwestern states a few times and to the south. Great truck and totally stock.

It has the cloth seats, the dealer told me it was leather. The truck is a Laramie, but no leather, no overhead puter, no cd player, no power seats either. It has power windows/locks, cruise, power mirrors, auto trans and its very clean inside. My 98 SLT sport has a lot more options. The only thing I miss is the power seats.

Should I be concerned with the transmission lines?

My '95 was the Laramie and it did have a single CD. I had an option between the CD or cassette. My truck also had power seat on the drivers side only. The two things I did not like about my '95 was that air bag was not available for the passenger side and the cup holder stunk. If you take any kind of curve, you better hang on to your coffee cup.

"Yes" to transmission line concern. Check and see if your line connections are the plastic clip type. These have a failure history especially in hot weather and working under a load. Do a search on this topic and you should find a lot of info. I replaced my lines with the upgraded ones with metal fittings from Dodge.
